We are looking for an Apprentice Mechanic to join our team at States Works.

We undertake a diverse range of operational activities within a fleet and garage environment. This includes undertaking a wide range of predominantly municipal type mechanical maintenance and repair services to vehicles, plant and equipment ranging from lawn mowers right through to heavy commercial and specialist vehicles. You will need to have a good working knowledge of complex engine management and control systems.

Your primary role will be the maintenance and repair to a wide range of vehicle and plant types within a customer focused environment ensuring that we meet the requirements of our clients in a safe, effective and efficient manner. The standard working hours for this post is 38 per week, and when needed you will be required to undertake overtime and attend ‘out of hours’ emergency call outs should they occur.

Due to the diversity of the work, it is essential that you demonstrate a flexible approach towards working as you will need to work across a number of the supporting trades and outside your chosen one.

Appointment to this role will be subject to the following pre-employment checks which will be completed following an offer of employment:

  • Satisfactory references which must include one from the candidate's current line manager
  • Occupational Health Clearance
  • Satisfactory, Basic Police Check, which can be obtained, at the candidates own expense, from the Guernsey Vetting Bureau, New Jetty, White Rock, St Peter Port, after an offer of appointment has been made. Convictions likely to be considered relevant to this post include crimes involving, but not limited to, theft violence, dishonesty, fraud, vulnerable individuals and children
  • Confirmation of required qualifications / registrations
  • Possession of a valid Employment Permit

Should the successful applicant not meet the requirements sufficiently he/she may be appointed at a lower grade than stated. The successful applicant would then have the opportunity to progress to the grade advertised once the necessary skills and knowledge have been developed and they have demonstrated the ability to undertake the duties at the higher level.
