The States of Guernsey are looking for a Customs Officer to join their team at the Guernsey Border Agency.

Customs Officers, work at the borders as part of the Guernsey Border Agency (GBA). The GBA along with the Guernsey Police, forms part of Bailiwick of Guernsey Law Enforcement.

The Customs Officer role is a warranted position and involves working primarily at the harbours, airport and postal headquarters but also around the Bailiwick coastline and inland. Duties range from the stopping, questioning and searching of passengers, searches of vehicles, vessels and freight, executing search warrants, leading investigations and arresting and interviewing suspects, together with participating in covert activities.

Customs Officers support investigations of cross border criminality to combat persons or syndicates targeting the island in relation to drug trafficking, commercial revenue smuggling and illegal immigration.

Newly appointed Officers will be given full training in the powers, legislation and works practice to equip them to carry out their role. Upon successful completion of their probationary year they will continue to develop their knowledge and capabilities and as they gather experience will be expected to broaden their skills for example by becoming part of a surveillance team, undertaking training in on entry immigration.

The role involves working flexibly following shift patterns on early, late and day shifts, including working weekends and with some standby and call out duties.

Officers will be responsible to the operational shift Higher Executive Officer. During their probation, they will be supported by mentors and members of the training team.

They will work closely with staff and managers in other units and teams within all areas of Bailiwick Law Enforcement. They will also be required to liaise with staff from outside Agencies including the Law Officers of the Crown, other States departments and National and International Law Enforcement agencies to identify and tackle new and emerging threats.

Should the successful applicant not meet the requirements sufficiently he/she may be appointed at a lower grade than stated. The successful applicant would then have the opportunity to progress to the grade advertised once the necessary skills and knowledge have been developed and they have demonstrated the ability to undertake the duties at the higher level.
