The States of Guernsey are looking for a Customs and Excise Officer to join their team at the Guernsey Border Agency.

The post holder will work within the Customs Clearance Team of the Customs & Excise Division which has primary responsibility for the collection and protection of customs and excise duties in relation to the importation and production of dutiable goods, the protection of society from the importation and exportation of prohibited or restricted goods in freight, and for providing accurate information to the public and businesses on customs and excise related matters.

The Customs Clearance Team ensure appropriate customs declarations are made for all goods imported into, and exported from, the Bailiwick, and import and excise duties collected through such declarations are accurate, together with undertaking certain functions to protect the revenue whilst facilitating legitimate trade. They are also responsible for the regulation of uncleared goods which includes the detaining and examining of goods, and enforcing the import and export licencing regime.

The post holder will also provide support to border enforcement activities at the ports of arrival, postal sorting offices and freight clearance depots, together with providing assistance to the on-entry immigration control of passengers arriving into the Bailiwick from outside the Common Travel Area.

This role involves working flexibly, including some shift working and weekend working, together with some standby and call out duties.

Should the successful applicant not meet the requirements sufficiently he/she may be appointed at a lower grade than stated.
