Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Monday 23/03/2020

Monday to Wednesday

Weather

After a disappointingly cold and cloudy weekend, the sun will finally blaze for three days straight. Furthermore the wind will drop off to just a moderate E’ly through most of Monday and then a light SE’ly through Tueday and Wednesday. The pristine clear sky will allow quite a range of temperatures, with the daily maxima generally around 11-12°C and the nightly minima around 4-5°C, possibly with ground frost in places. If any day is likely to break into the low teens then it’s probably going to be Tuesday. We are past the equinox now, so day-length is longer than night-length and we are currently gaining almost half an hour of extra light each week. The UV index will be just shy of 5, so if you are really fair skinned then you might want to start thinking about putting a little cream on your face, when heading out for a prolonged time in the middle part of the day.

Surf and Tide

Gorgeously clean waves on each day. Absolutely miniscule on Monday (1 foot at best), then 3-5 feet on Tuesday and 2-4 feet on Wednesday. Day by day the tides will be getting bigger, nothing too dramatic though. The highs will all be close to dawn and dusk, roughly 8.6m in height on Monday, then 8.9m on Tuesday and 9m on Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday

A distinct cooling off (losing 2-3 degrees from the daily maxima), as the wind backs to a moderate NNE’ly . Thursday might have a little more cloud than the previous days, but it should still be dry and mostly sunny . Head to the south coast cliffs and beaches for the loveliest walking conditions. The most definite signal for rain is overnight into Friday morning, but even this is uncertain, as it is such a weak cold front that it might only amount to a cloudy spell in the end. Friday will be a mixed bag of cloud and sunshine, with just a low risk of the odd passing shower. Once again, the south coast will be the most comfortable area, due to its shelter from the breeze.

The Weekend

Hopefully not quite as cloudy as the weekend we have just had. However, I’m not going to get carried away with optimism, because it currently looks remarkably similar, in terms of the wind strength and direction, as well as the general temperature and humidity of the airmass. So the key message is definitely to take advantage of the week-days, particularly Monday to Wednesday.

Early Hints for Next Week

Not looking too special I’m afraid, with a more active cold front likely on Monday and then a rather bitter ENE’ly wind through the rest of the week, causing cloud and showers to continually developing in the Straits of Dover, and then feed into the Channel Islands area. There might even be a bit of hail or sleet mixed in with those showers, so don’t pack your hats and gloves into the attic just yet.

The next forecast update should be with you on Wednesday.
