Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 22/02/2020

Monday

The Weather

An almost cloudless day with a UV index of 8 and just a gentle southerly breeze, backing to a south-easterly in the afternoon. Unsurprisingly, with such perfect conditions, the temperature should climb a little higher than 20°C. If you find it uncomfortable when it gets hotter an this, then you should definitely make the most of this day. If, however, you love the heat, then you will be happy to hear that this is just little starter.

Surf and the Water

Some amazing west-coast waves. 6+ feet and pretty much as clean as it gets. The reefs and beaches will all have their magic moments as the tide rises and falls through quite a large range… 8.5m high at 8:10am, then 1.8m low at 2:20pm, then 8.8m high at 8:20pm.

Tuesday

The Weather

A proper scorcher, as the breeze will continue to soft in from a SE’ly direction, bringing a steady stream of hot and dry air from the continent. The expected max temp for this day is about 24-25°C. Once again, the UV index will be a high 8, so it will be extra important to protect your skin.

Surf and the Water

More perfect surf. And if you thought that Monday was a bit large for you then you will be glad to see that Tuesday's waves are a couple of feet smaller. The tidal range will be just as large, but the highs and lows will be about 30-40 minutes later in the day.

Wednesday

The Weather

Very much like Tuesday, except about a degree hotter and this time the gentle breeze will come from a due E’ly direction in the morning and then a NE’ly in the afternoon. That's going to make the south coast beaches really perfect for a visit at the end of the school day, especially the likes of Petit Port and Jaonnet Bay.

Surf and the Water

It's going to be hard to stay out of the water in this heat, and the swimming conditions should be lovely in most parts of the island (sea temperatures between 15 and 16°C). As for the surf, well that's looking to be 3-4 feet and clean again, best of all during the morning, so ‘lucky you’ if you've got the day off.

Thursday and Friday

The Weather

It is a bit uncertain whether or not these days will be quite as warm as the previous two. The breeze will be very gentle and rather variable in direction. The current expectation is for a N’ly on Thursday and a W’ly non Friday. That in itself is enough to reduce the heat somewhat, but I think the main player will be the arrival of some cloud in the sky, and possibly even a shower. It's the typical situation after a couple of hot days, when vigourous thunderstorms are expected to develop over France and the UK. As usual, the likelihood of these thunderstorms affecting the Channel Islands is pretty low, but it certainly isn't out of the question. Therefore, given the uncertainty, the max temperatures could be anything between 20 and 25°C, but I am expecting them to be at the lower end of this scale.

Surf and the Water

The wind should be light enough that the surfing and swimming conditions remain great. The waves will be a tiny but smaller (about 2-3 feet) and the tidal range slightly smaller too. Highs in the late mornings, roughly 8.4 m on Thursday and 8.2 m on Friday.

The Weekend

The Weather

Despite the uncertainty about Thursday and Friday, it is looking pretty definite that the weekend will be very much back to normal, with moderate to fresh SW’ly or W’ly winds bringing mostly dry weather, but at least one spell of rain or drizzle. There will no doubt be sunshine at times, but not enough to lift temperatures any higher than about 18°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf; about 2-3 feet but rather sloppy/choppy compared to the recent perfection. The best of the swimming / paddle-boarding conditions; probably in the Fermain area, during the middle part of the day.
