Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 27/07/2020

Monday

The Weather

For a week to improve as much as this one is going to, it does demand that we start on a bit of a low point. Therefore, Monday is going to be rather wet and windy. The foul weather will be briefer than Saturday’s was though. This time the morning rush-hour will feel a bit draughty from the force 5 S’ly wind, but the rain won’t arrive until lunchtime. It should then be dry by late afternoon, by which time the wind will also veered W’ly. Max temps about 20°C in Town and 19°C in most other areas (but with the wind making it feel quite a bit cooler).

Surf and the Water

Lovely clean waves in the morning and early afternoon, but only the same sort of size and power as on Sunday (which is a whole lot better than flat of course). The best swimming options will be around high tide (8.1m at 12:20pm), close to the shelter of the north and west coast sea walls.

Tuesday

The Weather

Dry and mostly sunny, but no warmer than Monday, due to a moderate WNW’ly airflow. The toastiest areas will be up and down the east coast, particularly in Town of course.

Surf and the Water

Choppy water on the north and west coast (similarly sized waves to the previous days). Much smoother water along the south and especially the east coast. Once again, high water will offer the silkiest conditions for swimming and kayaking etc (7.7m at 1:20pm).

Wednesday

The Weather

With high pressure almost directly overhead, the N’ly wind will be light to barely be noticeable, allowing the sunshine to warm us up nicely. The likely max temperature being around 21 or 22°C. The great thing about days like this is that, all the beaches around the island are as comfortable as each other, so the times and heights of the tides are pretty much all you need to consider.

Surf and the Water

The tidal range will be fairly small... low water will be around 3m at 8:20am and 8:50pm, high water about 7.3m at 2:30pm. The west-coast waves should be about 2 feet and clean.

Thursday and Friday

The Weather

As the high-pressure system moves over Germany, we will tap into the warm continental airflow on its southwestern flank. This means that the max temperatures should increase by a degree or two per day, as we enjoy copious blue sky and sunshine. Therefore, with some proper heat over the islands on Friday (mid to high twenties), there is a slight risk that thundery showers will move over us during the evening. Watch this space to see how that story develops.

Surf and the Water

Whatever surf we ge, is going to be clean. At the moment Thursday is looking very small (one foot max). Friday certainly looks bigger, but how much bigger depends on the development of a mid-Atlantic low-pressure system. The tides will be high in the mid-late afternoons, so the water will obviously be particularly crowded at knocking-off time on Friday (regardless of this forecast), so beginners would be well advised to choose another time to go surfing. As for everybody else, look out for each other, keep it fair and keep it fun.

The Weekend

The Weather

With very similar weather but a gentle NW'ly wind, Saturday looks pleasant but with a much more down-to-earth temperature. If that's still not cool enough for you, then you (and your gardens) will be glad to hear that a stronger W’ly wind on Sunday, will bring much cloudier skies and perhaps even a few spells of rain.

Surf and the Water

More good quality waves on Saturday, followed by choppy but rideable conditions on Sunday. Swimmers and paddle-boarders etc, will need to head back over to the east coast to find smoother water (or perhaps the south coast on Saturday). Low water will be around lunchtime and the highs will be roughly six hours before and after.

The next forecast update will be with you on Tuesday or Wednesday.
