Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 24/08/2020

Monday

The Weather

Rather cloudy for the most part, but this will occasionally brighten up for a brief spell and it will occasionally deteriorate with the passing of a shower. The most constant element will be the wind, a force 4 WSW’ly, which will mean that Town will scoop the highest temperatures, the max being about 20-21°C.

Surf and the Water

Cleaner west-coast surf than on Sunday. However, it will be rather small and sloppy, only 1-3 feet for the most part. The tidal movements are still pretty large but no longer sufficient to cause trouble on the coast-roads. High water will be about 8.8m at 11:10am and low water about 1.8m at 5:20pm.

Tuesday

The Weather

The foulest weather of the week looks fairly certain to fall on this day; heavy persistent rain in the first half of the morning, followed by a few hours of drizzle and murk, before the afternoon becomes dry and bright, although with a very strong wind. The wind is probably the most important element of this forecast, with current expectations being for a force 5-6 S’ly in the morning, gradually veering to a force 7 and very gusty WSW’ly in the afternoon.

Surf and the Water

Definitely a day to be relished by Guernsey’s more hardcore windsurfers. The only shot at a decent bit of regular surfing, will be in the morning, but that wind will still be very hard to manage. Swimmers, believe it or not, will still find some pretty good shelter if they head to Fermain at high tide (11:50am at a height of roughly 8.3m).

Wednesday

The Weather

Dry bright and breezy. The perfect laundry day. Nothing special in terms of holiday activity though, with a force 5-6 W’ly wind and a max temp of only 19°C in Town.

Surf and the Water

Whomping huge waves first thing in the morning (almost as big as on Tuesday evening). Still a chaotic onshore mess though, which will be best suited to the windsurfers and kite-surfers. Once again, swimmers couldn’t do much better than Fermain. High tide will be at lunchtime.

Thursday and Friday

The Weather

Thursday should see this week’s second nasty low-pressure system plough through the UK. The details and timings of our weather are still uncertain at the moment, so if you are making plans then I should make them pretty loose and don’t get too upset if you have to change them. Winds are currently expected to be less dramatic than on Tuesday, with a force 4-5 SSW’ly gradually veering to a force 5-6 WSW’ly. Showery rain will probably be the most notable feature, and the current expectation is that it will fall mostly in the afternoon, overnight and on Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, we should be mostly dry and sunny again, but with very gusty NW’ly winds it’s not going to be warm... 18-19°C at best.

Surf and the Water

Very small tidal movements on both days. Thursday looking best for surfing, especially in the morning and probably through lunchtime. The north and west coasts will be best for windsurfing and kitesurfing on Friday, but the south and east coasts will still be nice for a swim, especially in the afternoon.

The Weekend

The Weather

A really rather chilly Saturday for this time of year, with a blast of N’ly winds carrying air all the way down from the pole. This is because the low-pressure system that will have given rain over the previous days, will now be in centred around Holland, whilst high pressure sits over the Atlantic. It will be a very dry air-stream though, so showers will be so sparsely scattered that we are unlikely to catch any at all. More likely lots of sunshine and really fabulous visibility. The south coast will be the place to shelter from that cold wind, and the sea will be a few degrees warmer than the air so don’t be afraid to go for a dip or three. As for Sunday, the current expectation is for the wind to reduce to a light W’ly, as that Atlantic high-pressure system starts to move over the Channel. This should allow a good recovery in temperatures, with a slim chance of hitting 19-20°C in Town.

Surf and the Water

There’s unlikely to be any surf of quality on Saturday, although the south-coast ripples will be super clean and might just be big enough for a bit of bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Sunday might have some small but fairly clean waves on the west-coast. Low tides in the late mornings and high tides in the late afternoons.

The next forecast update will be with you on Tuesday or Wednesday.
