Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 26/08/2020

Wednesday

The Weather

Dry bright and breezy. The perfect laundry day. Nothing too special in terms of holiday activity though, with the W’ly wind being very slow to drop off. A gusty force 6 early morning, moderate force 4 by early afternoon, with a max temp of only 19-20°C in Town, then finally down to light force 2-3 at dusk.

Surf and the Water

Whomping huge waves first thing in the morning (almost as big as on Tuesday evening). Still a chaotic onshore mess at that time. The afternoon should offer something more manageable though. Once again, swimmers couldn’t do much better than Fermain. High tide will be at lunchtime.

Thursday

The Weather

Probably sunny at times in the morning, although with the odd shower likely. Towards lunchtime those showers will be more widespread, so the cloud will start to fill in and it will be downhill from there, with the showers merging into persistent rain through the afternoon, some of it rather heavy. The wind a mild and moderate S’ly for the majority of the day, veering to a strong SW’ly in the evening and a fresh W’ly later in the night.

Surf and the Water

Lovely clean waves, but only 2-3 feet. Great fun for both novices and more experienced surfers. Small tidal movements making the morning and the afternoon pretty much as good as each other. High water will be just 7m at 2pm. Sheltered nooks along the north and west coasts will be the best for swimmers.

Friday

The Weather

Occasional heavy showers, with sunny intervals. As the day progresses, the ratio should shift slightly in favour of the sunshine, but it’s never going to be very warm, with temperatures only peaking around 18°C and the force 4-5 NW’ly wind adding a further chill factor.

Surf and the Water

Very poor quality west coast surf, but lovely swimming conditions on the south coast (in between the showers). The prime locations will be Petit Bot, Saints Bay, Moulin Huet and Fermain. High water just 7m again, this time at 3:30pm.

The weekend

The Weather

Despite lots of sunshine, the key word is cool, because a N’ly wind (fresh to strong on Saturday, becoming moderate on Sunday) will bring air all the way down from Polar regions (the visibitity will be fabulous). We do have a slight advantage though, due to the relatively warm seas around us, so we should still manage about 18°C maxima. However, you will certainly want to find some good wind protection before you strip down to your trunks and bikinis (the south coast will be best for that). As for showers, they will be very few and far between, compared to Friday, but we will probably catch a brief one or two during the latter part of Saturday and then the early part of Sunday.

Surf and the Water

There’s unlikely to be any surf of quality, although the south-coast ripples will be super clean and might just be big enough on Saturdays for children on bodyboards. Sunday will be the better day for south-coast kayaking and paddle-boarding, due to the lighter winds.

Next Week

The Weather

With a fair bit of tropical storm activity on the other side of the Atlantic, there is a lot of uncertainty about the subsequent development of weather systems that will wander over to our shores. So be prepared for plenty of changes from update to update. However, the current outlook is looking settled and pleasant for the most part, with temperatures returning to average or perhaps slightly higher. The wet day (if we have one) currently looks most likely to be Tuesday.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be mostly small or flat, but there are bound to be a couple of more decent sessions briefly emerging. As for swimming, the best conditions will depend on the winds which are likely to come from different directions every day. The tidal movements will be fairly large, with highs of 8-9m in the early mornings and in the evenings.

The next forecast update will be with you on Friday.
