Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 09/09/2020

Wednesday

The Weather

A cloudy day with a moderate WNW’ly breeze. Sunshine is unlikely but it could be reasonably bright during moments of slightly thinner cloud. Likewise, the cloud could also thicken up at times, sufficiently to bring a small risk of drizzle. So yes, a rather bland day for sure, but with a max of 19°C, at least it won’t be a cold one.

Surf and The Water

The surf will be sloppy, choppy and pretty miniscule. However, the swimming and paddling conditions will still be great on the east-coast. Small tides; 7.5m high at 11:10am, then 3.3m low at 5:10pm.

Thursday

The Weather

Perhaps a little cloud to shake off in the morning, but quickly becoming super sunny and warm. The max temp 20-21°C. The breeze just a gentle NE’ly, meaning that the south coast beaches will be the warmest (by a whisker).

Surf and The Water

Very small tidal movements and lovely smooth water for swimming and paddle-boarding. High water will be about 7m high at 11:40am, then about 3.7m low at 6pm.

Friday

The Weather

With the wind staying very light but backing to a NW’ly direction, it will bring in slightly more cloud than on Thursday. As a result, the temperatures will peak about a degree lower in most places, but Town will probably be just as warm.

Surf and The Water

Over on the west coast, we will have the same kind of small and sloppy surf that we’ve had for the majority of the week. When it comes to swimming and paddle-boarding, then I think the lunchtime session at Bordeaux is really going to be the cream of the crop. High water, just a miniscule 6.7m at 12:40pm.

The Weekend

The Weather

The various forecast models now seem to be in good agreement that the low-pressure systems will be deflected towards Scotland rather than the Channel, meaning that there is now high confidence in the forecast for very settled (rather than stormy) weather this weekend. Temperatures and sunshine amounts are set to increase as the weekend progresses. Saturday morning will have a NW’ly breeze and a fair amount of cloud, by the afternoon, we should be into bright sunshine with a lighter NE’ly and a top temp of 19-20°C. Then with a continental ESE’ly on Sunday, we are looking at a full day of sunshine and the temperature should climb to a balmy 22-23°C (everywhere gorgeous, but the west-coast beaches really at their prime).

Surf and The Water

The smoothest waters for swimming and paddle-boarding will be south coast on Saturday and west coast on Sunday. However, the wind will only be force 1-3, so the other coasts will still do alright. As for the surf; both days should be 2 feet and clean for the most part, but there is a chance of something bigger on Sunday. Small tides; with lows in the mid-mornings and highs in the mid-afternoons (around 6.5m on Saturday and 7m on Sunday).

Next Week

The Weather

With a sustained E’ly airflow, we are in for a very warm (or even hot) week of continental influence, ie hazy sunshine with high cloud often developing in the afternoons and evenings, bringing the possibility of a thundery shower or two. Apart from this hit-or-miss type of showery scenario, we will probably stay dry. Although it will feel much like summer, don’t forget how close we are to the autumnal equinox, meaning that the nights are almost as long as the days now.

Surf and The Water

With a cut-off low-pressure system just west of Biscay ('cut-off' that has detached from the jet-stream and become slow-moving), we could be in for a full week of beautiful surf; small to begin with but steadily becoming larger. The one thing that’s not so great is the spring tides, because that generally means short sessions in fast-changing conditions. By dusk on Wednesday, we will have our first 9m high and then just after dusk on Friday, we will have our first 10m high.

The next forecast update will be with you on Thursday or Friday.
