Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 13/09/2020

Monday

Weather

Sunny and very warm for September. It’s not easy to put a figure on it , but I’m expecting the airport to record a top temp of 27-28°C. Further east it will probably be a couple of degrees lower, but it’s possible that Torteval could even be a couple of degrees higher. The wind a force 3 ESE’ly for the most part, perhaps occasionally moderate force 4.

Surf and the water

More gorgeously clean 2-3 foot surf in the more exposed west-coast bays, whilst we have further super-smooth water for swimming in the more sheltered west-coast nooks (L’Ancresse also nice and smooth for swimmers). The tides will be about 3.2m low at 11am and about 7.7m high at 5pm.

Tuesday

Weather

Lot’s of medium and high-level cloud will have brewed up overnight, with a few heavy and thundery showers in the area. Most of the rain and hail will evaporate as it falls through the very warm and dry low-level air. However the odd one might just give us a soaking. There should also be some spells of weak sunshine, giving us a max temp of about 22°C in most areas, and probably 23°C in Town.

Surf and the water

Another day of 2-3 foot waves, but with a little bit of chop this time (not really enough to spoil it though). Head east for the best swimming and paddle-boarding conditions. The tides will be about 2.5m low at midday and about 8.4m high at 6pm.

Wednesday

Weather

The shower risk will have diminished on Tuesday evening, but the cloud will linger into Wednesday morning, possibly thickening and lowering enough to give some mist in the morning. Not to worry though, because the afternoon is looking super-sunny again, with a moderate N’ly wind giving us a pleasantly normal max temp of about 20°C. Head to the south coast for the most comfortable conditions.

Surf and the water

Conditions will be lovely for swimming and paddle-boarding on the south coast. The west coast surf certainly won’t be anything special, thanks to the cross-wind, but the waves should still be 1-2 feet and rideable. The tides will be about 8.6m high at 6:30am, 1.7m low at 12:50pm and about 9.1m high at 6:50pm.

Thursday and Friday

Dry with sunny spells and fresh to strong ENE’ly winds. Temperatures might not quite reach 20°C on Thursday, but they should easily manage it on Friday. That wind will kind of ruin it though, so it would be best to find a tall wall if you’re planning on doing some sunbathing. The only other thing that's really worth a mention is that the high tides are likely to be troublesome on the east coast, especially in the evenings.

Weather

Surf and the water

The strong cross-offshore wind will make the surf very difficult to manage and it might even flatten it right out, given that it’s only going to be 1-2 feet anyway. Swimmers who are seeking shelter should simply go for high tide, so they can get as close to the sea walls as possible. Big tides, with highs around breakfast time and dusk. The highest being slightly over 10m on Friday evening.

The Weekend

Weather

Scattered showers will have moved into the area on Friday night, possibly thundery. These are likely to come and go throughout the weekend, with bright or sunny spells in between. The wind remaining a strong ENE’ly through Saturday, but probably relaxing to moderate force 4 on Sunday. Temperatures probably peaking at 20°C by day and only dipping to about 15 or 16°C during the nights.

Surf and the water

Powerful swell (probably 3-5) will turn up from Hurricane Paulette. It will have travelled a very long way so the intervals between the waves and the lulls between the sets will be very long. I’m not sure what the quality of these waves will be like, but there will probably be plenty of swell wrapping onto north and south coasts as well as the west.

The next forecast update will be with you on Tuesday evening…
