Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 23/09/20200

Wednesday

The Weather

All day we will be a continuation of the wetter and windier weather that might have forced you to close your windows in the middle of the night. The wind will be the most constant element (a force 4-5 W’ly during the day, increasing to a force 6-7 SW’ly overnight). The rain will be far more sporadic though, just falling as occasional showers here and there, but all adding up to about 5-10mm by the end of the day (so greening up your lawns nicely, whilst the wind tries to smother them with leaves). Head east for the most comfortable conditions, the top temperature being 17-18°C in Town.

Surf and The Water

The west coast surf will begin as a cleanish 2 feet, then soon become a choppy 3 feet. The tide will be about 8.3m at 11:20am, and that’s going to be the best time for any keen swimmers to go in a sheltered bay like Fermain.

Thursday

The Weather

Really windy, with a strong force 6-7 WSW’ly for the most part, but this possibly increasing to a gale force W’ly, with the passage of heavy showers (those showers possibly thundery and with hail mixed in). In between the showers, we should see some decent sunny intervals, so keep your eyes open for a few beautiful rainbows. Once again, Town will benefit from a bit of shelter, but it really won’t be much of an advantage; the top temperature just a mere 15°C.

Surf and The Water

BIg waves will come from a mixture of the local storm swell and a more distant pulse from Hurricane Teddy. Surfers and windsurfers can expect some 10-foot lumps to develop through the day, so it will definitely be an ‘experts only’ kind of day. Once again, a high-tide dip at Fermain is pretty much the only option worth considering if you are a sea-swimmer (roughly 7.6m just around midday).

Friday

The Weather

The wind will veer to a force 6 NNW’ly, and the showers will continue to fall like stair-rods in the morning, but then become very isolated and somewhat lighter in the afternoon. This should allow a decent amount of sunshine to break through, which should be relatively pleasant down on the south coast. However, the max temperature will only be about 15°C again, so most people will be keeping their jumpers or jackets on.

Surf and The Water

Possibly some clean and surfable south-coast waves in the more exposed bays (on the mid to low tides) and also the option of a swim in the most sheltered bays like Saints (on the high tide). Very small tidal movements, with a 3.9m low at 7:10am, then 6.9m high at 1:30pm.

The Weekend

The Weather

The sky should be a mixed bag of cloud and sunshine and the showers will be so isolated that many parts of the islands might even stay dry throughout. Furthermore, the wind will not be as oppressive as the previous couple of days... still coming from a very chilly NW’ly direction, but only blowing at a strength of force 4-5. This should all result in daily maxima of 15-16°C, and nightly minima of about 10°C.

Surf and The Water

Very choppy on north and west coasts, but quite surfable nonetheless (probably around 4 feet). Head south and you will find much cleaner waves, but they will be much smaller and it’s always a bit of a gamble whether you can do anything more than bodyboarding or bodysurfing down there.

Next Week

The Weather

Monday and Tuesday should be a continuation of the weekend’s chilly sunshine (probably staying dry). Then the rest of the week will see a return to wet and windy conditions; the details very uncertain at this stage but never quite as severe as those of this Thursday.

Surf and The Water

Winds generally force 4-5 W’ly or NW’ly, so the surf will always be choppy and the smoothest swimming conditions will always be on the east and south coasts.

The next forecast update will be with you on Friday.
