Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 19/10/2020

Monday

Weather

The force 4-5 SSE’ly is really going to feel quite windy after 3 or 4 days of relative stillness. This wind will serve to import warmer air though, all the way up from southern France and northern Spain. Temperatures should therefore pick up to about 15-16°C, which is nicely back to normal for this time of year. As for the weather, dry with a mix of cloud and sunshine (a great day for drying laundry).

Surf and the Water

Another virtually flat day. Unless the push of the tide is enough to generate some surfable ripples for young kids, just before sunset. Whopping tides again... 10m high at 9am and then 0.6m low at 3:20pm. (Pretty splashy on the east coast in the morning, especially around Bulwar Avenue).

Tuesday

Weather

Another windy but even warmer day, with temperatures peaking at about 16-17°C under partially sunny skies. The wind direction won’t have changed much, just a slight nudge round to a due S’ly, meaning that the most sheltered coastline will be at the southern ends of the bays (both east coast and west coast). As for the weather, dry again until the overnight period, when some rather heavy rain will set in for a few hours, probably giving us between 5 and 15mm by dawn on Wednesday.

Surf and the Water

Finally, the emergence of some swell. A shame it didn’t arrive about four days earlier but ‘heyho’ etc. At least with the S’ly wind direction, we should get about half a day of clean 4-6 foot waves. The tides getting a little smaller now, with a high of 9.7m at 9:40am and a low of 1.2 at 4pm.

Wednesday

Weather

The overnight rain will probably remain heavy and persistent until mid-morning, then clear to much lighter and more isolated showers through the rest of the day. As we see this change to drier weather, we shall also see a change of wind, from a strong S’ly to a fresh WSW’ly, so if you’re going for a lunchtime stroll, then the sheltered spots will generally be found along the east coast. Temperatures remaining slightly higher than average, with another max of 16-17°C.

Surf and the Water

The early bird will catch the worm on this day, as we will start off with waves of similar size and quality to those of the previous evening. Unfortunately however, those who leave it to the afternoon will find conditions that are both smaller and messier. The tides will be about 9.2m high at 10:20am and about 1.9m low at 4:40pm.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

A few sunny spells but mostly cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain. The winds will generally be moderate to strong SW’ly, bringing pretty average temperatures by day (14-15°C) and relatively mild temperatures by night (12-13°C).

Surf and Tide

Thursdays surf will be smaller than the previous days but it should be rideable and clean, definitely worth a bash. Friday perhaps a little bigger but much, but probably a much more choppy and messy affair. The tides now down to 8.3m at 11am on Thursday and then 7.5 at 11:50am on Friday.

The Weekend

Weather

A strong force 6-7 SSW’ly wind on Saturday, easing to moderate SW’ly on Sunday. Both days mild, bright and probably dry, with only a slight chance of rain on Sunday evening.

Surf and Tide

Probably a couple of lovely days for both surfers and windsurfers, with a brisk but clean cross-offshore wind and waves of about 3-5 feet. The tides beautifully small, with highs of less than 7m at lunchtime and lows of around 4m shortly before dawn and shortly after dusk.

The next forecast update should be with you on Tuesday evening.
