Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Thursday 29/08/2019

Thursday

Weather

The question of showers has now been removed, just leaving us with a simple day of mixed cloud and sunshine. The best of the sunshine should be in the afternoon and the light WSW’ly wind (force 2-3) will not have a huge effect on the rather average temperatures Most places will peak at 19-20C, but the really sheltered parts, such as Town, will hopefully sneak up to 21C.

Surf and Tide

Surf; 1-3 feet and fairly clean. Probably best at Vazon in the mid-late afternoon and perhaps again at sunset. Big tides; 8.6m at 6:30am and 9.1m at 6:50pm.

Friday

Weather

With the W’ly or variable breeze dropping down to just a force 1-2, and the cloud reducing to almost nothing, we should see at least an extra degree of daytime heating in all parts of the island. If you are beachward-bound, then the tide will be much more significant than the wind, when choosing your location (see details immediately below).

Surf and Tide

Surf; 2-3 feet of swell, with a gorgeous glassy finish. Best at Vazon in the mud-late afternoon. Bigger tides than Thursday. This time we will have 9.2m at 7:20am and 9.7m at 7:40pm. (And a perfect lunchtime low, for walking across to Lihou).

Saturday

A few sneaky sunny spells, especially early and late. However, on the whole, the day will seem much cloudier than Friday, and this might thicken up to give a spell of rain in the afternoon. With a much firmer W’ly wind this time (force 4-5), most places really aren't going to feel so special. 19-20C should be the max in most parts, but Town and sheltered bays like Fermain should feel much more comfortable at 20-21C.

Surf and Tide

3-4 feet and choppy. Some good fun for the more experienced surfers, at places like Portinfer though. BIG tides, as we are only three weeks shy of the Autumnal Equinox. High water will be 9.7m at 8:10am and 10.1m at 8:20pm.

Sunday

Weather

Some big tidal splashes along the west-coast road between about 7 and 10am, but apart from that, the island should stay dry, because the cloud and the shower-risk will have deteriorated. The wind-chill will still be present though, with a force 4-5 NW’ly for the most part. Town and Fermain will remain pleasantly protected, but on this occasion, you will also find good shelter at Moulin Huet, Saints Bay and Petit Bot.

Surf and Tide

Even choppier west-coast waves than on Saturday, but the swell should be as large as 4-5 feet in the morning, so there should be plenty of fun to be had, and there might even be some clean 2 footers down at Petit Bot in the late morning and the late afternoon. Another pair of BIG tidal highs; 9.9m at 8:50am and 10.2m at 9:10pm.

Next Week

An fine and settled picture from Monday to Thursday, with sunshine being more abundant than cloud, and winds generally lighter than at the weekend (still broadly W’ly or NW’ly). Friday currently looks wet, as that's when the next low-pressure system is most likely to hit us. However, the timing and position of that is uncertain, so there is a high chance that that detail will change.

Look out for my next forecast update on Sunday evening.
