Wednesday
Weather
A dry and unusually calm day by recent standards, with just a light force 3 N’ly wind, gradually backing W’ly and possibly becoming even lighter in the afternoon. As such, the brightness that filters through the broken cloud, will feel very pleasant. Max temperature 12-13°C by day, min temperature 10-11°C by night.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be almost flat. There might just be some longboardable 1 foot waves towards high tide. A great day for swimming all around the island though, thanks to the lack of wind. Low water will be around 8am and high water will be around 2pm (7.6m).
Thursday and Friday
Weather
A moderate force 4 NW’ly wind will bring mostly cloudy skies but probably no showers. If you do feel a passing spit or spot on the breeze, then that will literally be all it is, not enough to wet the ground and certainly not enough to choose the tumble drier over the washing line. The south and east coasts will be the most pleasant areas to go for a decent almost-winter walk. Max temperatures will be about 12°C on both days. There will be a bit of a plummet in the overnight minimum temperatures though... 9-10°C on Thursday night and then a rather cold 4-5°C on Friday night.
Surf and the Water
A nice new 3-4 foot swell for these two days, peaking late Thursday and tapering off through, although the wind direction will make these waves more lumpy and ragged than would be ideal. Bearing that wind direction in mind, swimmers will find the smoothest water along the east and south coasts. Low tide will be in the mid-mornings and high water will be in the late afternoons (7.9m Thursday, 8.5m Friday).
The Weekend
Another couple of generally dry but cloudy days, with cool air trapped under a leaden sky. Winds will only be light force 3 NNW’ly, so it should feel quite comfortable to go for a decent walk, but with the temperature fluctuating between overnight minima of 7-8°C and daily maxima of 9-10°C I don’t think you’ll be taking your jackets off.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish 1-2 foot surf… the direction of the wind will be far from ideal, but its gentleness will be the saviour. That said, the south coast will still offer a slight advantage in terms of smoothness for swimmers. Tides will be low in the late mornings and high around dusk (roughly 9m).
Next Week
Weather
The air will stay on the cool side, as the wind (generally moderate force 4, perhaps occasionally fresh force 5) pivots between a W’ly orientation and a N’ly. It looks as though showers will become more of a feature as the week progresses, perhaps even with some hail in the mix by the time we get to Friday. Consistent cloud cover and wind strength will mean that temperatures don’t change very much, generally bouncing between maxima of 9-11°C and minima of 7-9°C.
Surf and the Water
It currently looks as though Monday and Friday will be blessed with some long period swell to satisfy the surfers. It will all be rather choppy, but at least it will be better than the rest of the week which is looking virtually flat. The wind direction will generally favour the east coast for swimming, and occasionally the south coast too. Tidal movements will be on the large side, with highs of around 9.2m on Monday and Tuesday, tapering off to 8.5m by Friday evening.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
