Monday
Weather
Cloudy but dry, with the SW’ly wind (mostly moderate force 4, occasionally fresh force 5) bringing a steady supply of mild… 9-10°C early morning, otherwise generally 11-12°C. There might even be some brightness slipping through a cloud crack here and there, making a sheltered walk feel very pleasant (most likely along the east coast).
Surf and the Water
Cleanish 4-5 foot surf, and some pretty good windsurfing conditions too. High water will be at 10:10am (roughly 8.3m). Low water will be around dusk (4:40pm).
Tuesday
Weather
The wind will start off SW’ly, like on Monday, but it will be stronger and then halfway through the day it will switch to a NW’ly. Radical wind changes like that, usually occur around a weather front, so it will be no surprised to hear that we are in for a dose of rain, probably lasting from around 10 am until around 1 pm. Apart from that, however, it won’t feel particularly different, with temperatures generally peeking around 11-12°C, but the east coast (Town) always being the most comfortable area and possibly a degree warmer.
Surf and the Water
4-5 foot surf on the west coast, cleanish in the morning, thoroughly messy in the afternoon. However, the windsurfing should be good on the west coast in the afternoon and surfers might possibly find some clean 2-foot waves on the south-coast beaches. High water will be at 11:10am (roughly 8.3m). Low water will be before dawn and after dusk.
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
Three very similar days… essentially we are looking at sunshine and showers, with min temps of 8-9°C and max temps of 10-11°C. The good news is that the showers will be very sparse and brief, giving much more time for sunny spells and for one or two pretty rainbows. The bad news is that the wind will be relentlessly strong… force 6 WNW’ly for the most part, occasionally ramping up to force 7 on Thursday and Friday.
Surf and the Water
We will most likely maintain 3-4 foot surf, but it will always be very choppy. Windsurfing conditions should be excellent though, especially on Thursday. Swimmers will always find that the east coast is smoothest, especially down at Fermain. Medium sized tidal movements with lows around dawn and highs around lunchtime.
Saturday and Sunday (Christmas Eve)
Weather
Saturday will pretty much be a continuation of Friday… occasional showers, punctuated by the odd sunny spell, all held together by a strong force 6 W’ly wind. Sunday looks set to improve though, as the showers gradually reduce in frequency and then die out completely. Wind-wise, we will probably start Sunday with a force 5-6 W’ly but we should finish the day with nothing more than a gentle force 3. Temperatures very much like the previous days, probably peaking at 11°C. Saturday night should be mild… no cooler than 8-9°C, but Sunday night might end up being a chilly one… possibly falling as low as 5°C.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 2-3 foot surf on Saturday, likely dropping off to 1-2 feet on Sunday. Saturday will likely be the best day to go windsurfing and Sunday the best day to go for a quick pre-Christmas swim. Tides will be low in the mid to late mornings, then they will be high in the late afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday evening…
