Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 19 January 2024

Saturday

Weather

Force 4-5 S’ly winds will bring cool French air to the Islands, making it feel much cooler than Friday. With temperatures only peaking at 5-6°C, it will already be a couple of degrees cooler, but the real difference will be the bite of that wind, compared to Friday’s calmness. Skies will be pretty sunny for the most part, but high cirrus cloud will make that sunshine rather hazy and milky. It won’t really be until after dusk though that the cloud really thickens up, then around midnight when the rain starts to fall.

Surf and the Water

Surfers should maximise their rest and recovery time, because this will be the final day of flatness. Windsurfers and kite-surfers should find plenty of action though. Low water will be around dawn and high water will be just shy of 2pm (7.1m).

Sunday

Weather

Saturday night’s rain should have cleared off by dawn or breakfast time at the latest. Leaving us with a cloudier and windier day (force 5-6 SSW’ly), but also a much milder day. Temperatures will lift from around 8°C at dawn to about 12°C by mid-afternoon. Then, with similarly strong winds and another dose of overnight rain, the temperature will only fall to about 10°C. In summary, the weather won’t be nearly as pretty as Saturday’s but the mildness of the air should mean that it’s just as comfortable if you are out and about. For the best protection from the wind, best to either head to Town or Fermain on the East coast, or around Pleinmont on the west coast.

Surf and the Water

Clean waves for surfers (although the strength of the cross-offshore wind will be rather challenging)… 4 foot waves at dawn, picking up to 6 foot by dusk. Low water will be around 9am and high water will be at 3:15pm (7.1m).

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

Carrying on as Sunday left off, Monday will have strong force 6-7 winds, but this time coming from a W’ly direction and brining a scattering of rather heavy and squally showers, interspersed by brief spells of sunshine. Temperatures will peak at 12°C but you will definitely need to find some good shelter (such as in Town or down at Fermain) for that temperature to feel comfortable. Tuesday should be even milder, getting up to 13°C pretty quickly and staying there through most of the daytime and well into the evening. Tuesday’s rainfall will be more of a drizzly affair than Mondays, skies more consistently cloudy, whilst the force 6 wind comes at us from a SW’ly direction.

Surf and the Water

Whopping west-coast surf… 12+feet on Monday, then about 10 feet on Tuesday. Tuesday’s waves will certainly be the cleanest and most manageable, especially on the north coast where they will be a bit smaller but still very rideable. On Monday low water will be around 10:20am and high water will be at 4:20pm (7.4m). On Tuesday low water those tides will be about an hour later (high water being 7.7m).

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Wednesday should be dry and reasonably pleasant, with the wind relaxing to a moderate force 4 W’ly and the clouds parting to reveal some fairly lengthy spells of sunshine. Thursday should be similarly dry, but the breeze will change to a force 5 S’ly and the skies will probably be a bit cloudier. Moving on to Friday, it should remain dry, whilst winds fall light and variable, as high pressure passes directly overhead. Each day peaking at roughly the same temperature… somewhere between 11 and 12°C

Surf and the Water

The surf will stay big (generally 6-8 feet) and it should be really clean at times. High tides will be shortly before dawn and after dusk (incrementally increasing from 8.1m to 8.7m). Low tides will be at lunchtime.

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
