Tuesday
Weather
Although the early morning and the late afternoon are looking as grey as every other day of late, the middle part of the day is looking quite bright… you might even see a brief moment of proper sunshine. The wind will be an uncomfortable force 5-6 SW’ly, but that little bit of lunchtime brightness should allow the temperature to reach a max of 11-12°C.
Surf and the Wate
Some reasonable clean 3-4 foot surf and some great windsurfing/kite-surfing conditions too. Very small tidal movements… low water will be about 3.5m at 9:20am, then high water will be 7m at 3:30pm.
Wednesday
Weather
We will wake up to some pretty big puddles, but the rain will probably have become drizzly by breakfast time. Through the rest of the day, the drizzle will be rather persistent with mist and occasional fog. This will mean that the airport is bound to experience one or two delays, but they will hopefully be quite brief as the fog waxes and wanes. Winds will be lighter than any other day this week… light force 3 W’ly in the morning, veering NE’ly in the afternoon, before changing to a force 5 S’ly in the night time. Temperatures will peak at 11-12°C, just like Tuesday.
Surf and the Water
Some reasonable clean 5-6 foot waves on the west coast, and some pretty smooth water for swimming on the other coasts. Medium-small tidal movements… low water will be about 3m at 10:40am, then high water will be about 7.7m at 4:40pm.
Thursday to Friday
Weather
Strong SSW’ly winds… force 6 through most of Thursday, force 7 during the night-time and then force 5 through most of Friday. There will also be quite a lot of heavy rain… persistent on Thursday (likely adding up to 15-20mm), then showery on Friday (likely adding up to 5-10mm). Temperatures will likely peak at 12°C on Thursday and 11°C on Friday, but Friday will certainly feel like the nicer day, because there should be some decent spells of sunshine in between the showers on that day.
Surf and the Water
Clean 4 foot waves on the west coast and some excellent windsurfing/kite-surfing conditions too. The tides will continue to get bigger as we move towards the new moon. Lows will be around midday and highs will be shortly before dawn and after dusk… picking up from about 8.2m on Thursday morning to about 9m on Friday evening.
The Weekend
Weather
It’s very uncertain… the story keeps changing according to the track of a passing low-pressure system. Probably not deep enough to be a named storm, but decidedly unsettled nonetheless. The uncertain part of the story is whether we will be on the mild side of the system (with strong SSW’ly winds) or on the cold side with similarly strong NNE’ly winds. The current expectation is for the mild scenario, but either way, it won’t be dry and it won’t be calm.
Surf and the Water
Bigger surf again… likely 6+ feet (and possibly clean on Saturday, but that bit is not so certain). Very big tides (a sign that we are approaching the Vernal Equinox ‘woohoo’)… high around dawn and in the mid-evenings… roughly 9.5m on Saturday and 10m on Sunday.
The next forecast update will be on Thursday or Friday…
