Friday
Weather
A similar mix of sunshine and showers to what we saw on Thursday. Those showers being rather heavy, certainly having a few hail stones mixed in, possibly also with some rumbles of thunder. The sunny intervals might feel a little more pleasant than on Thursday though, because the wind won’t be quite so vicious… just a force 4-5 W’ly on this occasion, with gusts of around 30mph rather than 50mph. Rather chilly though, with a max temp of just 7-8°C and a min temp of 4-5°C.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 6 foot west-coast surf… slightly cleaner towards the end of the day, when the onshore wind is lightest. The east coast will certainly be the best area for a winter swim. Low tide will be at 8:40am. High tide (just a tiny 6.3m) will be at 3pm.
Saturday
Weather
This is no longer looking like a rotten day, the wind should only be a moderate force 4 W’ly and the weather will be sunshine and showers… those showers being very few and far-between, meaning that the sunny spells should be really quite lengthy. Max temp 9°C, min temp 6°C.
Surf and the Water
The onshore wind won’t be especially strong, so the 10-15 foot surf will only be slightly messy. It really will be particularly massive and powerful though, so it currently looks as though it would be much better to wait until Sunday. If it’s swimming you’re interested in then the east coast should be good for that. High tides will be about 8.7m around 6:40am and 7pm. Low tide will be at 1:10pm.
Sunday
Weather
A rather deep low pressure system will sweep across the area, giving us fairly strong SE’ly winds for the majority of the day (probably force 6 in the morning and force 5 in the afternoon), then similarly strong N’ly winds through the night time. The morning is looking grey and drizzly, then the afternoon is looking more showery. There won’t be a heck of a lot of sunshine… just the odd bright interval in between those showers. Max temps should be 9-10°C, min temps 6-7°C.
Surf and the Water
Clean 4-5 foot surf on the west coast all day. Tides will be about 9.2m high around dawn (the east coast could be a bit of a splashy affair for that one), then about 9m high in the mid-evening. Low tide will be at lunchtime.
Next Week
Weather
Monday and Tuesday will be two days of cold sunshine… strong force 6-7 N’ly winds on Monday, easing moderate force 4 to fresh force 5 on Tuesday. Max temperatures 8°C and 9°C respectively. Winds will return to that familiar mild and most WSW’ly direction for the latter part of the week… bringing a series of weather fronts (some of them drizzly and misty, some of them heavy and showery), but they should be separated by some drier and brighter interludes. Daily/nightly temperatures at the backend of the week… roughly 10-11°C for the maxima and 7-9°C for the minima.
Surf and the Water
The only clean surf on Monday and Tuesday will be on the south coast, but that always comes with a great deal of uncertainty. The more dependable surf (albeit a bit choppy) will be on the west coast from Wednesday onward. Tides will be high around breakfast time (9.2m on Monday, decreasing to 8.2m by Friday) and low in the mid-afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Sunday…
