Guernsey Weather Fox

7+ day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 25/09/2019

The foul conditions are set to continue for the vast majority of this period, so there will be little room for recommendations of gorgeous places to go etc. That said, there will be some slight differences between the days that could be important to you, so here we go with my best current estimate for the details.

Wednesday

Once the early rain has cleared eastwards, we should be in for a dry and bright interlude, taking us from the end of the morning rush hour until about 1 or 2pm. Then we shall have cloud and intermittent rain or drizzle, through until sometime tomorrow morning. The windiest times will be this morning and the second half of tonight, when most places will a have strong force 6 WSW’ly (force 7 in the most exposed areas). In between those times, the wind will drop to force 5 (perhaps occasionally force 4) and although that might feel a bit nicer, it will allow the cloud to come a bit lower, so there will probably be some spells of mist and hill-fog.

Surf and Tide

A big jump in wave height; 10 feet or more on the west coast. Too wild for most, but perhaps good for a hardcore few mid-bay Vazon in the afternoon and evening. As for the tides, low water will be 3.3m at 10:30am, high water 7.9m at 4:30pm.

Thursday

Weather

The mist and drizzle will be replaced by heavy rain for the morning rush hour, this turning to lighter showers through the rest of the morning and then some brightness in the afternoon. We might even see a brief spell of proper sunshine around the time the kids knock off school and for the evening commute. However, the WSW’ly winds will be strong throughout, barely dropping below force 6.

Surf and Tide

Slightly smaller waves, but still an impressive 6-8 feet. The title range will be getting; low water 2.4m at 11:30am, high water 8.7m at 5:30pm.

Friday.

Possibly our windiest day, force 6 to 7 WSW'ly throughout. On the plus side, it doesn't look as though we will have any prolonged periods of rain, just the odd fleeting shower, that you would have to be rather unlucky to catch.

Surf and Tide

Another 10-foot and wild day. The tides will be a bit larger than ideal for these conditions; 8.9m at 6:10am and 9.4m at 6:30pm, so lots of splashes and debris along the usual stretches if west-coast road.

The Weekend

Mostly, if not entirely, dry and bright on Saturday. Very little respite in the strong WSW’ly wind however. Then it's looking very wet overnight and through Sunday morning, possibly drying up on Sunday afternoon, but probably just turning showery. Sunday’s winds will be just as strong, but they will back to a S’ly direction through the morning, meaning that the east coast might also be a little vulnerable to the 10m tide. The evening tide will be higher still, about 10.4m for that one, but that will probably only be a problem for the west coast, because the wind will have returned to a W’ly direction by then.

Next week

As high pressure pushes all this troublesome stormy weather eastwards, we can expect Monday and most of Tuesday to have a cool and showery north-westerly airflow, but then the rest of the week is looking sunny and settled. Surfers, stand by far some top quality hurricane swell by the first weekend of October. The forecast charts have been pretty consistent for this one, so confidence is building.

The next Forecast update should be with you on Thursday or Friday.
