Wednesday
Weather
Strong force 6-7 S’ly winds will bring cloudy skies and blustery showers, heaviest and most frequent in the morning and for a time around dusk. It will be a mild day though, should you be tempted to go out (why not eh, there’s always some beauty to be found somewhere, it’s just that sometimes you have to dig a bit deeper). Max temps 11°C. Overnight min 8°C.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean surf, 6 feet at dawn, 4 feet by dusk. A difficult wind to paddle against but a great one for windsurfing and kitesurfing. High water around 8am (9.1m, so very splashy on the west coast and a little on the east coast too). Low water at 2:30pm.
Thursday
Weather
Brighter skies, fewer showers and gentler winds. Still generally unsettled though, because those few showers will be heavy and the moderate force 4 wind (SSW’ly at dawn, veering WSW’ly by lunchtime) will still be brisk enough for shelter to be required if we want to enjoy the 10°C max. The best place to find said shelter will be in Town or in the Fermain area. Overnight temperatures only falling to about 8°C, as winds possibly become very strong. The strength of the wind is still very uncertain, move ahead to the Friday forecast for the continuation of that story.
Surf and the Water
Messier west-coast surf, but a gentler wind. The swell will be big enough for the north coast so there should be some clean and shapely waves up there, especially towards dusk. Another big tide, with a high of 9.1m at 8:40am, then a low at 3pm.
Friday
Weather
The potential for another severe storm, similar in strength to Goretti. The computer models are still inconsistent in their timing, positioning and intensity of this storm, so keep an eye on the forecast. However, suffice to say, whilst hoping for the best, it’s always wise to make early preparations for the worst. If winds are as strong as Goretti, then it looks as though the direction will be mainly SE’ly or S’ly, which would mean that some different trees in different areas would be vulnerable, especially as recent rainfall has very much softened the soil.
Surf and the Water
Possibly a crazy strong wind, so there should be only manageable option I’m really seeing for surfers at the moment is an early morning surf in L’Ancresse Bay. High tide will be roughly 9.1m again, at 9:15am, with the potential for big splashes on both the east and the west Coast. Low tide will be at 3:40pm.
The Weekend
Weather
For now, assuming that Friday is a very stormy day, then we can at least be relieved to see that the weekend is expected to be much much calmer, with W’ly breezes likely easing from force 4-5 dawn Saturday, to force 2-3 by dusk, then likely backing S’ly and becoming moderate again through Sunday. Showers will likely be very few and far between on Saturday, perhaps more frequent on Sunday. Likewise, sunshine should prevail on Saturday, but sunny breaks fewer and further between on Sunday. 8-9°C will be the likely max temp both days. And the min temps will likely be about 4°C each night (with the chance of a ground frost in places).
Surf and the Water
Mercifully much calmer, with respect to wind, but not perfectly offshore so perhaps not as epic for surfers as previously expected. Still some pretty huge waves though, particularly on Saturday, so surfers should find some great options on both days. Swimmers will also find opportunities, after maybe having a few days off. Tides will be high in the mid-morning (8.7m and 8.4m respectively). Lows will be towards dusk.
The next forecast update will most likely be on Thursday evening or on Friday morning…
