Thursday
Weather
A cloudier and windier day than lovely Wednesday, but there should be some sunny interludes during the morning. The wet time of the day will be from about 2pm onwards, with the heaviest bursts likely to be when the school kids are all walking and cycling home (so don’t forget your raincoats, and watch out for cars in puddles). Winds will be moderate force 4 SE’ly, increasing fresh force 5 by the time the rain comes, then veering SW’ly moderate force 4 overnight. Max temp 9°C, min temp 7-8°C.
Surf and the Water
Gorgeously clean surf all day. 6-8 feet and powerful at dawn, relaxing to around 4-5 feet by dusk. The best swimming conditions will be around high tide in the most sheltered north and west coast bays, such as Cobo or Pembroke. Low water will be at 9:20am and high tide will be at 3:30pm (7.4m).
Friday
Weather
A generally windier day than Thursday, increasing from a force 4-5 SSW’ly at dawn to an force 5-6 SSE’ly by dusk. The rainfall tending to be more of a showery affair, coming and going, with one or two sunny intervals to punctuate. The heaviest down pour is likely to be in the late morning (10-11am) and then we might get a similar drenching 12 hours later, around the time the pubs are closing. Milder air than on Thursday, with an early afternoon max of 10-11°C and an overnight minimum of 8-9°C.
Surf and the Water
Clean west-coast surf all day but stronger offshores will make it a bit tougher for surfers, whilst obviously much more exciting for windsurfers and kitesurfers. 6-8 feet at dawn, increasing 8-10 feet and powerful by dusk, meaning that the north coast will really be the better place to surf in the afternoon. Suitable swimming conditions will be hard to find, but they will probably be best around dawn, in the north and west. Low water will be at 10:40am and high tide will be at 4:45pm (7.8m).
The Weekend
Weather
It looks as though we might just be treated to a couple of radically different days… quite often sunny, and with much gentler breezes. However, there is expected to be a spell heavy rain on Saturday night, perhaps with stronger winds for a time. Focussing on the daytime for now though, Saturday’s plentiful sunshine will be accompanied by force 3-4 W’ly breezes, meaning that the east coast will feel nicest, then Sunday’s more limited sunshine will be accompanied by light force 1-3 (barely noticeable) breezes, from variable directions, meaning that all coasts should feel equally comfortable. Max temperatures will be around 11°C each day, with min temps likely around 8°C on Saturday night and 6-7°C on Sunday night.
Surf and the Water
Messier surf on Saturday… generally around 8-10 feet on the west coast. Then gorgeously glassy surf on Sunday… generally around 6 feet. Swimming conditions will generally be best on the east coast. All high tides will be slightly before dawn and after dusk (increasing from 8.4m on Saturday to 9m on Sunday). Low tides will be around midday.
Next Week
Weather
Another mixed bag of weather, some days calm, mostly dry and pretty sunny. Other days wetter and windier. At the moment, the foul weather really seems to be concentrated on Monday, but the natural uncertainty of a longer-range forecast means that we mustn’t be too confident about the dry weather that is currently expected to dominate the rest of the week. Tuesday appears to be the sunniest day, according to these current expectations, but it may well be accompanied by a fresh force 5 SE’ly wind, which would somewhat reduce any pleasant feelings. If you’re looking for positive indications that spring is coming, then I can tell you that the UV index should climb to 2 around midday… not enough for a suntan, but a noticeable change in intensity which will be highly detectable by the plants around us, and indeed within the human body if your mind is relaxed enough to observe it.
Surf and the Water
Clean surf most days (probably every day). Smallest waves likely to be on Monday and Thursday, with the other days all looking pretty big and powerful. Swimming conditions generally good in places that are sheltered from the swell, so we are mostly talking about Pembroke and the east coast. Spring tides, with some very large highs in the early mornings and in the evenings, peaking around 9.8m on Wednesday morning.
The next forecast update will be on either Saturday or Sunday…
