Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Saturday 18/01/2020

Saturday

Weather

This is the transition day between Fridays heavy showers and the settled weather of the week to come. The air is still unstable enough for some fairly large clouds to bubble up. However, it's all rather dry, so there should be far more blue sky and sunshine and the chance of catching a shower is pretty close to zero. Winds will be almost cam at first, followed by the gradual development of a moderate ENE’ly by the afternoon.

Surf and Tide

Incredibly clean waves on the west coast, and with smallish tidal movements making them good for surfing all day long. The waves will be about 5 feet, gradually dropping off to 3 feet and the tide will be 7.7m high at 20 minutes past midday.

Sunday

Weather

Almost cloudless perfection, day and night. However, a steady NE’ly breeze (about force 4) will bring col air, so the sunshine will only allow us up to about 8C at best. The night time won't be desperately cold, because of the influence of the 10C sea that surrounds us. However, the coldest spots will still fall to about 4C with a ground-frost likely by Monday morning.

Surf and Tide

The cross-shore wind direction isn't fantastic for the west coast, but it will be lovely for a novelty session down at Petit Port. The mid-late afternoon will be best, wherever you head, as a fairly strong 4-foot swell should develop by then. High water will be 7.2m at 1:30pm.

Monday and Tuesday

Monday will have incredibly high pressure. At 1049 or 1050mb, it could be a record breaker. Weather-wise, it will be almost a carbon copy of Sunday, in terms of wind, clarity and also the daytime and night-time temperatures. Then Tuesday should just see the tiniest observable difference which is that the force 4 wind should come from the ENE rather than the NE. This will just make the west coast feel marginally more sheltered and certainly improve the quality of the surf there (still about 4 feet in size, with a very small tidal range).

The Rest of Next Week

Forecast models seem to be a bit undecided as to whether we shall remain gloriously sunny or develop a sheet of cloud. Either way, it's going to be dry as a bone, with winds continuing to come from somewhere between the NE and the E. this winds will gradually become a bit stronger though, meaning that the days will probably feel cooler, even if the thermometers aren't registering any difference. The overnight minima will probably be a touch higher as a result though, only dropping to 5 or 6C in the air, with very little chance of any ground frost beneath. Surfers, I'm sorry but the waves will probably trend towards flatness by Friday. There's a good chance of a decent new swell for the weekend, but that's all very uncertain, so I should make the most of the waves on Wednesday, whilst thy are still 3-feet and clean.

The next forecast update should be with you on Sunday evening.
