Friday
Weather
Fresh SSE’ly winds will favour the north and west coast again. The temperature might rise to 10C due to the arrival of milder air (that's 2C higher than Thursday), but increasing cloudy skies and wind will mean that it probably doesn’t feel as nice as the previous days. Rain overnight into Saturday.
Surf and Tide
3 feet and clean all day, but with the tidal range getting larger, it will only really be the afternoon that will be worth pursuing. Low water 2.3m at 11:20am. High water 8.1m at 5:20pm.
Saturday
Weather
After a brief wet spell on Friday night, it might be wet underfoot on Saturday morning, but otherwise dry and increasingly sunny. The wind will be a moderate W’ly in the morning (great for Town and the eastern beaches), backing to a fresh SSW’ly in the afternoon (best for the west). Don't be lulled by the sunshine. Storm Clara will arrive with gales overnight, so don't forget to make sure everything is secure..
Surf and Tide
Both wind and tide will favour the late afternoon for west-coast surfing. Vazon should be 4-5 feet (maybe 6) and increasingly clean. Low water 1.7m just after midday. High water 8.7m at 6:10pm.
Sunday
Weather
The most significant story will be the gales or possible severe gales. SSW’ly at first, veering WSW’ly later. Weather-wise; grey skies and occasional rain in the morning, brighter skies with the odd heavy shower in the afternoon.
Surf and Tide
Very big waves, obviously disruptive to ferries. As for surf, I doubt you will find anywhere sheltered enough. High water will be worst for the west coast in the evening, because the wind will have a more onshore aspect, but it will be very splashy in the morning too. Both tides about 9.3m, firstly at 6:30am and secondly at 7pm.
Monday and Tuesday
WSW’ly gales with a mix of sunshine and brief squally showers all day Monday. Little change on Tuesday, except for a wind veer to a strong force 7 WNW’ly. The tides will be a big issue for the west coast, but not the east on this occasion. Monday’s highs; 9.7m at 7:10am, then 9.5m at 7:40pm. Tuesday’s highs; 9.9m at 8am, then 9.6m at 8:30pm.
The Rest of Next Week
Remaining very windy and often wet I'm afraid. However, we will probably stick to force 6-7 WSW’ly winds for the most part, rather than stepping up to gales or severe gales. Wednesday’s tide heights will be about the same as Tuesdays and then they will gradually taper away, until they slip under 9m on Valentines Day. Furthermore, if you are planning something romantic of an outdoor nature, then it does look as though we might see the return of light winds and sunshine for that day.
The next forecast update should be with you Sunday evening.
