Wednesday
Weather
Rain and fresh to strong SSE’ly winds, starting before dawn, with heavy bursts coming and going through the morning. The afternoon should be mostly dry but cloudy, without much respite in the wind. It will feel pretty mild and muggy though, so it should still be quite pleasant to go for a stroll or a sea-swim, especially if you find a nice sheltered nook like Pleinmont and Portelet.
Surf and The Water
A much improved surf forecast, with the flatness now expected to transform to 2-4 feet of swell in the afternoon, rather than on Thursday morning. The wind could also be strong enough to satisfy the windsurfers and kite-surfers too. Those seeking smooth water for swimming, will be best to shoot for the hours around high water (9m at 7:40am or 9.4m at 7:50pm).
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Two bright and breezy days. Sure it might be a little cloudy at times, but the only showers are expected to be in the middle of the night, and the vast majority of daylight hours will be dominated by warm air and sunshine (max temps 22-23°C, min temps 15-16°C). The cooler feeling that the wind will provide (moderate S’ly on Thursday, then fresh to strong SW’ly on Friday), will probably be a welcome relief. However, it won’t stop you from getting either sunburnt or dehydrated, so don’t forget to look after yourselves.
Surf and The Water
Thursday’s surf staying around 2-4 feet and clean. The wind probably not strong enough for kites and sail-boards during the daytime, but possibly so during the evening. Big and fairly splashy tides, especially in the evening. High water will be about 9.4m at 8:20am and 9.8m at 8:40pm. Moving on to Friday, the waves will more than double in size and power; and the tides will be bigger too, with highs of about 9.6m at 9:10am and about 9.9m at 9:20pm. Currents will be unusually strong for summer, especially during the evening, so inexperienced swimmers and surfers should be extra cautious.
The Weekend
Weather
Occasional heavy showers on Saturday morning, but plenty of sunshine during the afternoon and evening. The winds moderate to fresh WSW’ly. A few small changes on Sunday; the risk of showers much less than on Saturday, the wind a slightly gentler W’ly. However, the max temp should be just the same (20-21°C), thanks to some more afternoon sunshine.
Surf and The Water
On both days, Fermain will be probably the most sheltered beach for swimming and paddling. Over on the west coast, the waves will be much more choppy than the previous few days. Plenty good enough for surfing though, with wave heights around 6 feet on Saturday and 4 feet on Sunday. Once again, extra caution should be taken on account of the large tidal movements. The highs in the late mornings (rough 9.5m and 9.3m respectively). The lows in the late afternoons.
Next Week
Weather
Mostly settled weather Monday to Wednesday, with very light winds, lots of sunshine but still the risk of the odd heavy shower at times. Thursday onwards are obviously too far away to predict with much confidence. However, it’s currently looking likely to be more unsettled than the first half of the week.
Surf and The Water
The surf mostly small but reasonably clean. A slim chance of the waves getting large again towards the weekend. The tidal range gradually becoming medium to small, with the highs starting the week in the late mornings and finishing the week in the late afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Thursday or Friday.
