Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Saturday 12/12/2020

Saturday

Weather

Weather wise, it’s a simple story of long sunny spells and just the odd brief showers. It’s probably going to be the chilliest out of the next seven though. This is because it will be the only one with a NW’ly airflow (max temp 10°C). It’s going to be quite a strong wind too (force 5 for the majority of the day), so if you are planning a pleasant walk then your will probably want to head to the Fermain area or to the south coast cliff-paths.

Surf and the Water

South-coast surf is always a bit hit and miss... steep steps, short-rides, rock dodging etc. However, I don’t doubt that a few adventurous souls will strike it lucky. The west-coast waves will be too huge on this day, and they will obviously be a total mess, but fear not because there will be plenty of great waves there from Sunday onward. As for Saturday’s tides, 2.2m low at 10:30am and 8.8m at 4:30pm.

Sunday

Weather

And it’s all change for Sunday, as the wind backs to a S’ly direction and strengthens to force 6 or 7. This is going to bring a real blast of moist and mild air, taking the temperature right up to 13°C but unfortunately drenching us with rain and drizzle for the vast majority of the day.

Surf and the Water

A great day for wind surfing and surfing alike... 5-6 foot waves on the west coast and 1-2 foot waves on the north. The waves will be really clean on both coasts, but it will be really hard to paddle into them, with all that spray in your face. As for the tides... .1.8m low at 11:30am and 9.2m high at 5:20pm.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

The weather will be a bit up and down this week, but one consistent feature will be the mild S’ly or SW’ly airflow. Monday will have pretty much the same howling wind as Sunday, but the persistent drizzly rain should be substituted by sunshine and showers. Moving on to Tuesday, the SSW’ly wind will relax just a tiny bit (dropping to about force 5), but the sunshine and showers story will be pretty much the same. Max temp, probably 12°C on both days. Min temps, probably 10°C on both nights.

Surf and the Water

Great waves on the north coast on Monday, when the swell is really huge, then great waves on the west coast on Tuesday, when the swell is a more regular shade of big. In both cases, the waves will be well overhead and not really suited to beginners. The tides will be pretty big too, so we can expect some big high-tide splashes in all the usual places. The high tides will be around 9.5m at roughly 6am and 6pm.

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

The wind is actually expected to back to a SSE’ly direction on Wednesday, which will hopefully prevent a very wet weather-front from arriving over the islands, until the middle of the night. Once that weather-front has moved through, we should be left with mostly dry weather on Thursday and a slightly gentler SW’ly wind. However, don’t get too used to it, because the strong wind and copious rain will probably come back with a vengeance on Friday

Surf and the Water

BIG, clean waves are just going to keep on coming, with Wednesday’s wind direction making it particularly special. Wednesday’s tides will be pretty much as big as Tuesday’s and there is the potential for a particularly splashy and messy east-coast road, during Wednesday morning’s rush-hour. For the rest of the week, the tidal movements will still be large, but they will reduce a little each day and the wind-direction should be relatively harmless for both coast-roads (east and west).

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
