Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Saturday 23/01/2021

Saturday

Weather

A short-lived low-pressure system will have brought quite a lot of sleet and wet snow to Northern France in the night-time, and quite a lot of rain to the Channel Islands. However, this will all clear eastwards around breakfast time, changing our wind from a gentle NE’ly to a moderate NNW’ly. Pretty soon, the cloud will start to break up and some lengthy spells of sunshine will develop and leave us with a rather lovely afternoon. The max temp only a meagre 6-7°C, but it should still feel really pleasant if you head to a sheltered south-coast spot. Overnight, the temperature will drop right down to 2°C, so a ground-frost is almost certain and, with some hail showers also developing, there is also a risk of some icy patches at times.

Surf and the Water

Tiny tidal movements on this day. Perhaps some small clean south coast waves to play with during the morning when the tide is relatively low. Then, in the afternoon, the higher tide will offer some lovely conditions for sea-swimmers, and once again the south coast will still be the best place to go.

Sunday

Weather

A fresh to strong WNW’ly airflow will bring a full day of sunshine, showers and rainbows. Many of the showers will be heavy with hail and perhaps even some thunder. The max temp 6-7°C again, but feeling colder on this occasion due to the stronger wind.

Surf and the Water

Another day of tiny tidal movements. Very messy surf, but perhaps some west-coast fun for kite-surfers and windsurfers. Sea swimmers will find that the east coast offers the best options, especially during the afternoon when the tide is relatively high.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

Monday is still expected to be a fine and settled day, with high pressure bringing dry weather, bright sunshine and just a gentle NW’ly breeze. Overnight, the wind will back S’ly, bringing slightly milder air but also cloudier skies. There could be a little brightness through the first half of Tuesday, but it’s certainly looking very dull and damp for the afternoon and evening, possibly with some mist and hill-fog. The temperatures peaking at about 8°C on Monday and then 10°C on Tuesday.

Surf and the Water

Monday’s onshore wind should be gentle enough to keep the 4-6’ surf reasonably clean. Then the wind will be offshore on Tuesday, so the waves should be lovely on that day, even though they will have reduced in size to just 3 or 4’. Low water will be in the late mornings, and high water will be around dusk.

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Heavy rain or showers through the much of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The wind a fresh to strong SW’ly on Wednesday, increasing to near gale force on Thursday and Friday. It’s certainly not going to feel very pleasant, but it won’t actually be that cold, with temperatures peaking at 11°C on Wednesday and perhaps even 12°C on Thursday and Friday. You will definitely want to find some shelter if you wish to maintain that January jogging habit, and the places to this will be around Town or Fermain.

Surf and the Water

Fantastic windsurfing conditions, and some pretty good surf if you’ve got the skill and the stamina to deal with the wind. The waves will be about 6-8 feet on Wednesday and almost double that on Thursday and Friday. The tidal highs will be shortly before dawn and after dusk, and the tidal lows will be around lunchtime.

The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
