Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Saturday 30/01/2021

Saturday

Weather

All week, we have been sure of that this would be a rough old day, with a viscous low pressure system spinning from the Atlantic into France. The wind and rainfall details have been very hard to pin down though. The latest expectation, which is still rather uncertain, is that we will have a few dry hours in the morning, which will be sandwiched between the persistent heavy rain of Friday night, and Saturday’s rain, which will fall between late morning and late evening. The wind doesn’t look anywhere near as brutal as it could have been. However, it will still be pretty perky at force 4-6; kicking off SW’ly, which means the east coast will be spared the tidal trouble that was previously expected. By the evening, the wind will have backed around to a NE’ly direction, so that tide probably will be a bit of a splashy one. The max temperature will be about 10°C in the early morning, and it will gradually slip away to the minimum of 6°C in the late evening.

Surf and tide

Clean 4-5 foot surf, gradually picking up to 8 feet or by dusk. As for sea-swimming; Cobo or the north coast will probably offer the best options for that. The tides will be about 9.4m high at 7:30am and about 9.2m high at 8pm

Sunday

Weather

Gentler winds on this day, and the rainfall probably won’t be as heavy either. The wind will be force 3-5 SE’ly until it veers SW’ly through the overnight period, the rain will probably be as persistent as on Saturday, but it will be mostly drizzly, so it will only add up to about 5-10mm (roughly half of Saturday’s total). Max temperature just 7-8°C.

Surf and tide

Super-clean 6-8 foot surf on the west coast. Once again, head to Cobo, or up to the north coast for the best swimming conditions. The tidal highs will be 9.4m at 8:10am and then 9.2m at 8:40pm.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Weather

Monday will be very cloudy and wet, but with light and variable winds for the majority of daylight hours. However, by evening, a strong SW’ly wind will have set in, and this will stick around throughout Tuesday, only easing slightly on Wednesday. The rainfall will be much more showery on Tuesday and Wednesday, and we should be treated to some decent sunny intervals on both days. As for the temperatures; Monday should peak at about 8°C, and then Tuesday and Wednesday should jump up to about 10 or 11°C.

Surf and tide

The west-coast surf will be fairly clean and really big. There should be some occasional good surf on the north cost too. If you’re going for a swim and you prefer your water to be smooth and flat, then it will be best to head to Havelet or Fermain. The tidal range will start to shrink. The high tides will be in the early-mid mornings and the low tides will be in the mid-late afternoons.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Still rather showery but probably light and drizzly, so not adding up to much. As for the wind, that should back to a moderate S’ly on Thursday and then a light SE’ly on Friday, which will bring French air in our direction. At this time of year that’s pretty cold, so we will see the temperature slip away until it only peaks at about 7°C on Friday and we probably go into a frosty night after that.

Surf and tide

The tides will continue to shrink and to shuffle forward by about an hour each day. Meanwhile, the west-coast surf will also shrink to a clean 4-5 feet on Thursday and then just 2-3 feet on Friday.

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening.
