Monday
Weather
It’s going to be very much like Sunday, except not nearly so wet. We will have some mist, and perhaps this will occasionally thicken into drizzle or fog, but we won’t have any of the heavier rain that we saw on Sunday. The real similarities between the two days, will be the max temp of 9°C and the short supply of any brightness or wind. Indeed, the cloud will just kind of hang there, with nothing more than 5-10mph of variable breeze to waft it this way and that.
Surf and tide
Another day of super-clean powerful surf. The west coast will certainly be for experts only, whilst the north and south coasts will probably both offer some options for the intermediates during the afternoon. The tides will be about 9.4m high at 8:50am and about 1.4m low at 3:20pm.
Tuesday
Weather
Overnight, a strong force 6 SW’ly wind will have come along and livened things up a bit, chasing most of the misty murk away, washing the atmosphere through with a heavy dose of rain early Tuesday morning, and then leaving us with sunny spells and just the small risk of a shower in the afternoon. The wind will strength and direction will barely change, so it’s going to feel rather fresh in exposed areas, even though we pick up to a very respectable afternoon max of 12°C. Town will certainly feel the warmest, closely followed by Fermain and Pleinmont.
Surf and tide
Cleanish BIG waves on the west coast and super-clean smaller waves on the north coast; nothing but roughness down south and lovely calm water for swimming out east.
Wednesday
Weather
Probably a few glimpses of sunshine but it will never be long before we see a heavy shower or a longer spell of rain. The wind will be a force 4-6 SSE’ly in the morning, veering WSW’ly in the afternoon. Max temperature just 10-11°C this time, but that is still decidedly mild for early Feb.
Surf and tide
The west-coast surf will be fairly clean and really big. There should be some occasional good surf on the north cost too. If you’re going for a swim and you prefer your water to be smooth and flat, then it will be best to head to Havelet or Fermain. The tidal range will start to shrink. The high tides will be in the early-mid mornings and the low tides will be in the mid-late afternoons.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Much less wind and rain on these two days. The wind will be mostly S’ly force 2-4 and this will bring us a mixture of cloud and sunshine. The sunshine will probably be more of a Thursday feature and then cloud will tend to dominant on Friday. Both days could see the odd spell rain or drizzle, but they should only be brief and lights, as weak weather fronts swing round the edges of a low pressure system, which will be anchored over Ireland.
Surf and tide
The tides will continue to shrink and to shuffle forward by about an hour each day. Meanwhile, the west-coast surf will also shrink starting with a clean 4-6 feet on Thursday morning, tapering off to an equally clean 3 feet on Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
The forecast is always a little uncertain at this range, but it’s currently looking as though it will be dry, settled and occasionally sunny, at least as far as Sunday evening (when the next band of rain/sleet is expected). The wind will only be light, but it will be coming from the NE, which does mean that the temperatures will be taking a dive. Daytime temperatures are unlikely to exceed 7°C and if we get some clear spells overnight then we will probably wake up to a couple of frosty mornings.
Surf and the Water
Another couple of days of clean surf, to continue a pretty excellent run. That said, these two days are looking pretty tiny, only 1-2 feet, so this time it’s going to be all about the beginners and the longboarders. The high tides will be about 7.2m in the early afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Tuesday or Wednesday.
