Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Foo. Starting Monday 08/02/21

Monday

Weather

Mostly cloudy and dry. However, there will also be some brief showers sweeping through; perhaps occasionally falling as pure rain or pure snow but more frequently falling as sleet (which is simply a mix of the two). No accumulation expected, but certainly feeling very cold, with the air temperature only climbing to 3 or 4°C and the force 4-5 NE’ly making it feel as though it’s sub-zero.

Surf and the Water

Hopefully the surfers indulged in Friday and Saturday’s gorgeous waves and weather combo. Unfortunately, Monday will just be tiny and choppy on the west and north coasts. Down south, however, the swimming conditions will be nice and smooth, when the tide is high is in the mid-afternoon.

Tuesday

Weather

Probably another mostly dry day, with isolated showers. However they are more likely to fall as straight snow on this day. Although, the above statement is the most likely outcome, there is a slim chance that we will see something more exciting, because a nearby weather-front is currently forecast to put a more significant dump of snow over Brittany. As I said, it’s currently not expected to affect us, but it’s not unusual for the computer models to misplace these weather-fronts by 50 miles. What we can be most sure of is that it is going to be another very cold day, with the temperature only peaking at 2-3°C and a force 6 E’ly wind that will feel like a cheese-grater on your cheeks.

Surf and the Water

Clean 1-3 foot waves on the west-coast. Hoods, gloves and boots will be more essential than ever. The tide will be about 2.4m low at 11am and 7.9m at 5:10pm.

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

Wednesday looks likely to be dry, with a similar frigid temperature and as bitter wind as the previous days. It doesn’t appear that there will be any weather fronts in the vicinity on this day, so there is only the outside chance of catching a brief sleet or snow shower, which wouldn’t result in any accumulation. Thursday night and Friday then bring the next threat of a proper snowfall, as moisture-laden Atlantic weather fronts could slide over the polar-continental air at the surface, potentially leading to a good few hours of snowfall. If this situation does come to pass then the greatest uncertainty is whether the moist western air would be triumphant (turning the snow into rain and probably clearing the ground of any accumulations) or whether the dry eastern air would be triumphant (possibly preserving any snow-covering long enough to have some fun with it). The most important word in this entire forecast is ‘uncertain’. The computer models are pretty-much our only resource when forecasting this far into the future, and they are currently changing the story and shifting the goalposts with every update. As always, the best practice is probably to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Surf and the Water

Pristine 3-6 feet waves through the second half of the week. There could some epic uncrowded conditions, given that only the hardiest/well-insulated surfers will be able to handle the wind-chill. The tides will be low around lunchtime each day, and the highs will be in the early mornings and in the evenings, increasing in height until they are over 9m on Friday.

The Weekend

Weather

Of course, the temperature and any weekend activity, will all depend on what has happened on Thursday and Friday. However, the current expectation is that both days will be dry, with temperatures gradually returning to the February average (probable maxima of 7-9°C). There could well be some beautiful sunshine but, with a fresh to strong SE’ly wind, it’s very unlikely that you’ll be taking your jackets off.

Surf and the Water

Gorgeous clean surf, at a much more bearable temperature than during the week. Spring tides, with highs of about 9.4m at breakfast time and lows of about 1.1m in the early afternoons.

The next forecast update should be with you on Tuesday or Wednesday...
