Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Friday 19/02/2021

Friday

Weather

Another day of strong S’ly winds (we’ve had a lot of them this week), with a weather front parked to the northwest of the islands, trying it’s best to close in and give us a soaking, but not managing any more than a few spits and spots. The skies will be pretty grey for the most part, but we will still see temperatures peak at a healthy 11°C.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be super clean again, although the strong offshore wind will be a bit of a battle to paddle against. The waves will be a tad smaller than earlier in the week though; probably just 3-5 feet. If you are swimming then you will want to find plenty of shelter, so it will be best to shoot for high tide (7.2m at 10:50am), when you can stay as close to the sea-walls as possible.

Saturday

Weather

The S’ly wind will not have abated, but that weather front should have nudged nicely back to Southwest England, meaning that we should see a little more brightness and that the chance of light rain will be smaller. The temperature probably go all the way to 12°C on this day.

Surf and the Water

Gorgeous wind-groomed surf again. Getting pretty chunky again though; 6-8 feet on the west coast. Maybe L’Ancresse will produce something more beginner-friendly, in the 1-3 feet range. The tidal range is tiny, but once again, the best advice for swimmers would be to hit the high tide (6.7m at 11:40am).

Sunday

Weather

Our clingy friend the weather front (the one that’s been hanging around in the corner since Friday) is expected to finally cross the islands bringing us a grey morning with a little drizzle, and then an equally grey afternoon with persistent (perhaps occasionally heavy) rain. The wind will start off as a fresh SSW’ly and then it will go light and variable in the afternoon, which is why the rain will take so long to clear off. The temperature will only reach 10°C at best, but a walk in the rain could still be quite pleasant due to the massive reduction in wind.

Surf and the Water

Super-clean surf in the range of 5-7 feet. Not so good for windsurfers though. Tiny tides again, with a high of only 6.4m at 12:50pm.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

We should be dry by Monday morning, and then the cloud will also fizzle out by lunchtime, as a ridge of high-pressure topples across the area. The wind will be a very light W’ly, so the sunshine should do a good job of heating the island, probably taking us all the way to 13°C. Tuesday should be just as warm, dry and sunny, but the fresh to strong S’ly wind will be back, meaning that only the sheltered spots will really feel the benefit.

Surf and the Water

Yet more super-clean 4-6 feet waves. Monday will probably be the better day for both surfers and swimmers because the winds will be lighter, but windsurfers and kite-surfers will really be loving it on Tuesday. The tides will still be rather miniscule, with afternoon highs of less than 7m.

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Probably (because nothing is definite at this range) staying dry and mostly sunny, as a high pressure system is expected to gradually establish itself over Southern Britain. This will mean our wind gradually changes to a moderate SE’ly and eventually a light E’ly, which will feel reasonably comfortable even though it causes a steady decline in temperature. Nothing too dramatic, but daytime temperatures might struggle to exceed 10°C and the nights might even see a touch of ground-frost.

Surf and the Water

The tidal range will get bigger every day, but the surf will most likely drop off a bit; probably 2-3 feet, but still really good quality. Lovely swimming conditions too, especially along the west coast at the likes of Cobo and Port Soif.

The next forecast update will be with you on Sunday evening.
