Guernsey Weather Fox

7+ day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 24/2/2021

Wednesday

Weather

With the same wind direction as Tuesday, we will be pulling in similarly mild air. The slight differences are that we will have a little more cloud (so the sunshine will only be hazy at best), but the wind will be a tad gentler (just a moderate force 4 for the most part). The max temp should be a very spring-like 13°C. The night time will be mild too, because a thicker blanket of cloud will spread over us, but unfortunately that will also bring drizzle and mist by Thursday morning.

Surf and Tide

Big waves are pounding our shores again; the west-coast surf being about 8-10 feet and clean, whilst the north coast hopefully provides a more modest 2-4 feet. The sea and air are warming up ever-so slightly, so the swimming should be a little more bearable. The west and north coasts will be best to get out of the wind but it will be really important to seek out the sheltered nooks, in order to avoid the clutches of that powerful swell. Pembroke at high tide will probably be your best bet. Low water is at 10:40am and high water is at 4:50pm.

Thursday

Weather

A weather-front will be parked over the islands for the majority of the day, because the wind will have fallen slack and so there will be very little to help it clear eastwards. The morning is certainly looking murky and drizzly, and then the afternoon will probably be dry but remain cloudy until the sun finally pops out for an hour or two before dusk. What little breeze there is, will be a NW’ly, so the south and east coasts will probably feel warmest, but even they will only manage a meagre 10°C and then, with colder clearer air over the islands through the night, we can expect to see temperatures plummet to about 5 or 6°C.

Surf and Tide

The surf will be a tad smaller than Wednesday, dropping to about 6 feet on the west coast but remaining very powerful. The waves will also be a bit more choppy and wobbly, but definitely still worth a bash if you’ve got the skill and experience. Low water will be about 2.4m at 11:40am, then high water will be about 8.1m at 5:40pm.

Friday

Weather

The gentle breeze will have swung to a NE’ly direction, bringing increasingly dry air. There will probably be some pretty mist patches at dawn but these will soon burn off, as sunny skies take the temperature to a comfortable max of about 11°C. Head to the south coast for the absolute best of it.

Surf and Tide

The west-coast surf should be about 3-4 feet and clean. There might also be some rideable ripples at south-coast spots like Petite Port. Generally, however, the south coast water will be super-smooth and therefore particularly suitable for swimming. Spring tides will be upon us, with highs of about 8.6m at dawn and dusk, and low water at lunchtime.

The Weekend

Weather

The breeze will strengthen slightly to a moderate ENE’ly, but there will be very little change apart from that; the weather mostly sunny and dry as a bone, the top temperatures around 10-11°C. If that winds feeling a bit chilly for you, then southwestern parts, such as L’Eree, will offer you the best shelter.

Surf and Tide

Clean 3-4 feet waves, perhaps picking up to 5 feet for a time on Saturday afternoon. Once again, the best swimming conditions will generally be on the south coast, particularly around lunchtime, when the tide is low. The high tides will be over 9m, shortly after dawn and dusk.

Next Week

Weather

Dry and sunny every day, with a SE’ly breeze bringing the mildest air through the first half of the week and then an E’ly bringing slightly cooler air in the second half. We can expect some rather cold nights though, with clear skies allowing ground frost to form in many parts of the islands.

Surf and Tide

Super-clean surf throughout, but definitely more suited to longboarders and learners than it has been of late. Wave heights will probably be 2-3 feet in the first half of the week and then just 1-2 feet towards the end.

The next forecast update will be on either Thursday or Friday
