Saturday
Weather
That very wet weather of Friday lunchtime was a cold front and, as such, we were left with cold air in its wake. That’s going to stay with us through most of Saturday, meaning that the temperature probably won’t exceed 10 or 11°C and there will be lots of bubbly cloud, probably leading to one or two passing showers. The wind will be a moderate force 4 W’ly in the morning, backing to a light force 3 SW’ly in the afternoon.
Surf and the Water
The tidal range is increasing, but it won’t be that huge until early next week. For now, it’s going to be about 1.5m low at midday and 8.8m high at 6:10pm. The surf will be messy in the morning but reasonably clean in the afternoon; the west-coast waves should be 6-8 feet and the north coast probably 2-4 feet. The smoothest spots for swimmers will probably be Fermain and Havelet.
Sunday
Weather
A moderate SSW’ly wind will gradually bring milder air over the islands, leading to a top temperature of about 13°C. It should be a totally dry day, but the skies will still be rather cloudy in the morning, hopefully brightening up a little in the afternoon.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be smaller but cleaner; 4-6 feet on the west coast. The larger tidal range will make things a bit awkward though; roughly 9.3m high at 7:10am and 7:40pm; 0.9m low at 1:40pm (and yes that does account for the clock change). As for the swimming, well Pembroke and L’Ancresse will certainly be good for that.
Monday and Tuesday
Weather
A gentle SE’ly breeze will waft warm, dry French air towards us on Monday. As a result, we will have a full-day of bright sunshine and the temperature should pick up from about 6 or 7°C at dawn to 16 or 17°C in the mid to late afternoon. Then, with almost identical wind and weather on Tuesday, the temperature will climb about 2°C higher. On both days, the absolute balmiest conditions will be on the west coast beaches straight after the school/working day.
Surf and the Water
Another couple of absolutely gorgeous surf days; super-clean 3-5 feet waves. Massive tides though, 9.7m high breakfast-time Monday and 10m high breakfast-time Tuesday. The wind will be light enough that all coasts are reasonably smooth for swimming, but the north and west coasts will certainly be best of all.
The Rest of Next Week
Weather
It’s a little uncertain whether Wednesday will simply be a repeat of Tuesday, or whether an E’ly wind will develop, bringing slightly cooler air from the Channel, perhaps even with some banks of sea-mist. Thursday and Friday look almost certain to cool off quite significantly, as the wind strengthens to a fresh force 5 NE’ly and skies become much cloudier. On these days, the south coast will certainly be the place to go and salvage a little warmth.
Surf and the Water
Wednesday should certainly offer another day of top quality surf, perhaps a foot or two smaller than the previous couple of days though. The wind probably light enough for lovely swimming conditions all around the islands. Moving on to Thursday and Friday, the west-coast surf will not only turn rather choppy but it’s also likely to become very small or perhaps even flat. As for the smooth swimming conditions, they will probably be confined to the south coast.
The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
