Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Saturday 03/04/2021

Saturday

Weather

The overnight cloud has led to a milder start than we would have otherwise had, because we do have cool air over the islands at the moment. Unfortunately however, the cloud is expected to hang around for the majority of the day, meaning that the temperature will follow a fairly flat line, only increasing from 6 or 7°C at dawn to about 8 or 9°C, when the sun comes out properly in the late afternoon. The wind will be a moderate to fresh NE’ly during the daytime (pretty good for drying laundry), but it will ease off to a light force 3 overnight, possibly allowing a ground-frost to develop in the coldest areas.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be flat, but sea swimmers will still find suitably smooth waters down on the south coast. The tidal range will be medium sized (much smaller than earlier in the week), with high water in the late morning and low water in the early evening.

Easter Sunday

Weather

The first half of the day will be much like Saturday; dry but rather cloudy day. The good news however, is that the sunshine will start to dominate in the early afternoon and the wind will only be a light force 2 NW’ly, so the 9-10°C should actually feel pretty pleasant (seize the moment).

Surf and the Water

A very slim chance that the west coast waves will be big enough for keen young kids to surf during the morning, but I think most of us will be calling it flat. All coasts will be smooth enough for swimming, because the wind will be so light, so just head to your favourite spot depending on the tide. The high will just be a small one and it will be around midday.

Bank Holiday Monday

Weather

This is the first day that snow-lovers/haters might have been watching for a while, as a plunge of even colder air is coming down from the Arctic. This will only bring snow showers to a few parts of the UK and eventually (late evening) they might reach some of the hills of Normandy. For us, it’s looking like a largely dry and partly sunny day. The risk of a rain/sleet/hail shower will only be slim. The bigger story will be the bitterly cold feel of the strong N’ly wind, which will actually reduce our temperature during the day, such that we start of around 6-7°C and finish at about 4-5°C.

Surf and the Water

Not a day for surfing, but maybe the windsurfers and kite-surfers will be keen (don’t forget your gloves). If you are a keen swimmer, who’s not put off by the cold, then the best place to go for shelter will probably be Saints Bay.

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Tuesday looks very similar to Monday except that the showers will become more frequent over the Channel, so we will stand a greater chance of catching a few. They will only be brief though, so if they do turn sleety, then I wouldn’t expect it to progress to snow. If anything, I’d say hail is more likely. Wednesday then looks dry and sunny, with the wind probably easing from a fresh N’ly to a very light NW’ly, so this day should actually feel relatively pleasant, despite the air-temperature staying a couple of degrees lower than the sea-temperature. Thursday and Friday should then see a very slow recovery in temperature, until we just scrape double figures. The weather on those two days looking like a rather bland mix of brightness and cloudiness, but it’s currently looking neither wet nor windy, so there should hopefully be a nice feeling of momentum towards more spring-like conditions.

Surf and the Water

Yet more down time for surfers. Tuesday should offer a little action to kite-surfers and windsurfers though. The tidal range will be very small indeed on Tuesday (barely noticeable), picking up to a medium size by Friday, when the highs will be roughly 8m around 6am and 6pm.

The next forecast update will be on Bank Holiday Monday…
