Guernsey Weather Fox

6-day Forecast. Starting Tuesday 06/04/2021

Picture (one of my own)

Tuesday

Weather

Even colder than Monday left off… a bitter N’ly wind (max temp 6°C) bringing an alternating pattern of long sunny spells and very brief showers. The showers will be most likely around dawn and dusk, mostly falling as rain but occasionally as hail or sleet. The air will be very dry which means that evaporation/sublimation will be rapid, so even the most wintry showers are not likely to lead to accumulation.

Surf and the Water

I really don’t think that the onshore wind will be strong enough to whip up a sloppy 2 foot wave at Pembroke, but there is a slim chance and that is really the only chance of anything rideable this week. The wind should be sufficient for some fun if you are a windsurfer or a kite-surfer though. If you are just going for a swim, then definitely best to head to a south-coast beaches for maximum protection from the wind-chill. The tidal range will be tiny with a high of around 6.6m at 3:30pm.

Wednesday

Weather

Dry all day with a mixture of cloudy and sunny skies. The temperature creeping a degree or two higher than on Tuesday, as slightly milder air wafts in a gentler NW’ly airflow. We could be in for an equally cold night though, with min temps of 2-3°C and a ground frost in many areas.

Surf and the Water

Flat surf again, and this time there will be nothing of use to windsurfers or kite-surfers either. Swimmers will find the nicest conditions on the south coast and increasingly on the east coast as well. The tidal range will be almost as small as on Tuesday; this time low water will be at 10:40am and high water will be at 4:40pm

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Two more ‘middle of the road’ days, with temperatures nudging back towards the early April norm (probably peaking at 11°C on Friday). The skies rather cloudy but probably dry and reasonably bright. The wind just a gentle to SW’ly on Thursday and a gentle W’ly on Friday. The only possibly spoiler could be some rain and drizzle on Friday. This is currently expected to arrive around dusk and then to stick around until Saturday dawn. However, there is a slim chance that it could turn up early, so keep an eye on the next update to see how that story develops.

Surf and the Water

Another couple of down-days for surfers, windsurfers and kite-surfers. The swimming conditions generally best on the east coast, but often fairly smooth on all the other coasts too. The tidal range will get larger, until we have highs of over 8m on Friday (shortly after 6am and 6pm). Low water will be close to noon on both days.

The Weekend

Weather

The slight uncertainty about Friday night’s rain, means that we could get off to a rotten start on Saturday, but we should pretty rapidly see an improvement to dryness and super-bright sunshine. This finer weather should develop as a result of a high-pressure system developing in the nearby Atlantic. However, because the wind blows clockwise around high pressure, this does mean that there will be a NE’ly wind over the Channel, so we can expect the temperature to be on the slide again. Single figures are all we can expect.

Surf and the Water

There’s a slim chance that some swell will arrive by Sunday, possibly offering some 1-3 feet waves for surfers. The wind direction doesn’t look great for the west coast though, so it still isn’t looking like anything to get too excited about. Swimmers will find the smoothest water down along the south coast, particularly at Petit Port. The tides will be low at lunchtime and high around dawn and dusk (roughly 8.6m on Saturday and 8.9m on Sunday).

The next forecast update will be on Wednesday evening…
