Guernsey Weather Fox

6-day Forecast. Starting Tue 20/04/2021

Tuesday

Weather

It’s going to be a bit of give and take, because we will have light winds and cloudy skies in the morning, followed by moderate winds and sunny skies in the afternoon. This will all lead to a slightly higher max temp (14°C) than on Monday, but that increase in wind does mean that it won’t really feel the difference. If you want to seek shelter then best to head to the south coast, because that wind will be coming from the NE when it is strongest.

Surf and Tide

Clean 2 foot surf in the morning, turning rather choppy in the afternoon. Lovely conditions on all coasts for a morning swim, but then it would really be worth heading down to the south coast if you’re taking an afternoon dip. Tiny tidal movements again, with a high of just 6.5m at lunchtime.

Wednesday

Weather

The trends towards more wind and more sunshine will continue, resulting in a day that looks like a scorcher but actually feels pretty chilly. The wind will be a force 4 NE’ly, perhaps even touching force 5 at times, and the temperature will probably only reach 12°C. Once again, head down to that south coast for the best of the shelter, although there will also be some nice little nooks at the northern ends of some west-coast bays.

Surf and Tide

The west-coast surf isn’t really looking any smaller than on Tuesday (2 feet), but the wind will be an even bigger spoiler. Once again, the south coast will be the best place for swimming and the tidal range will be tiny, with just a hint of a high at lunchtime.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

The temperature will level off to a bit of a flat-line, only changing from about 9°C at night-time to about 12°C during the day. The reason for this consistency is the fresh to strong E’ly wind, which will really be a bit of a nag. The sun will shine gloriously on both days, but you will definitely want to stay in the shelter of the sea walls when you are trying to enjoy the west coast beaches.

Surf and Tide

The surf will be very clean, but only about knee-high to a not very tall person. The windsurfing and kite surfing will probably be the main events. As for the swimming, best shoot for the mid-afternoon high tides, when you will be able to find some shelter beneath the west-coast sea-walls.

The Weekend

Weather

Weather forecasting models keep suggesting that cloud and rain will move in from the west, but then with every update, the high pressure system over Britain just seems to get stronger and deflect this weather away to Biscay. Therefore, although it is with a little bit of uncertainty, it does look as though we are just in for more dryness, sunshine and nagging E’ly or NE’ly winds; not just through this weekend but possibly right until the end of the month. After such a wet winter, it seems bizarre to say so, but we could actually really use some rain right now.

Surf and Tide

With the Atlantic lows looking likely to keep losing the battle against the British high pressure system, the signal for a more solid swell is also diminishing. I think there is a good chance of some clean 2 foot waves on the west coast, a slight chance of some 3 foot waves but almost no chance of anything bigger. As for the tides, they won’t be huge but they will be bigger than during the working week; the lows around lunchtime and the highs around dawn and dinnertime.

The next forecast update will be on Thursday evening…
