Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Wednesday 28/04/2021

Wednesday

Weather

There will be more cloud around than on previous days, but there will be plenty of sunny spells too and these should feel very pleasant due to the winds only being light force 3 NW’ly. The temperature should reach a max of 12 in most parts, but probably go up to 13°C in the sunniest southern and eastern areas. As for the showers (because we could all do with a little rain right now), they will tend to develop wherever it is warmest, so that’s likely to be over France and England during the daytime. There’s a slim chance that some of them will continue to drift over the islands, but it’s more likely that we will catch some of the showers that develop over the Channel during the evening and night.

Surf and the Water

Flat surf but some lovely smooth water in southern and eastern bays, perfect for a swimming or kayaking, especially around the very high tides in the early morning and late evening (roughly 10m and 9.9m respectively).

Thursday

Weather

Just the smallest chance of a shower early morning, before the cloud clears to sunny skies, leaving us with another cool but comfortable and rather beautiful day. The breeze just a light force 3 N’ly and the highest temperatures (12°C) probably being found along the south coast

Surf and the Water

Another day of flat surf but some nice swimming conditions, especially along the south coast. The tides will be high at 9am and 9:20pm (roughly 9.8m and 9.7m respectively).

Friday

Weather

It’s almost a perfect repeat of Thursday, with just the smallest chance of a shower early morning, before sunshine dominates the rest of the day. The only minor difference is that the gentle breeze will be coming from the NE, so that means that western parts of the island should feel a little nicer than on the previous days, but the south coast will still be the warmest (12-13°C).

Surf and the Water

Lovely smooth water for swimming, kayaking and paddle-boarding. The tide will be about 9.4m high at 9:40am and about 1.1m low at 4pm.

The Weekend

Weather

Much like the previous days, the skies will be mostly clear, but because we are in a cool airmass, showers will be prone to form in the warmest places. By day, this will be over the larger landmasses and by night, it will be over the Channel. So yes, there is a slim chance of waking up to find that your gardens have already been watered, but apart from that, we are just talking about dryness and sunshine. The winds will probably be even lighter than the previous days, and variable in direction, so we shall probably find that all areas are equally comfortable, and that Town takes the top temperature award (by a whisker), with 12-13°C on both days.

Surf and the Water

Plenty of quality time in the water, if you enjoy smooth-water activities. If this includes a bit of jumping and coasteering, then the late mornings will be nice, when the tide is high (8.8m on Saturday and 8m on Sunday).

Next Week

Weather

Monday looks like one of the warmest days of the week (13-14°C), as a low-pressure system develops over Ireland, meaning that we will be in a slowly strengthening SW’ly airflow. The sunshine will turn hazy and skies will eventually turn cloudy, before showery rain arrives in the night time. Tuesday and Wednesday then look wet and windy for much of the time, as that low pressure system spins across the Channel and into France. The rest of the week then looks very uncertain, but I’d say that ‘settled and sunny’ looks more likely than wet and windy. Thursday probably rather cool, due to that low pressure system having drawn a quick blast of arctic air over the Channel as it departed. However, as the atmosphere readjusts, Friday’s temperatures might be just as high or perhaps a little higher than Monday’s.

Surf and the Water

Possibly some good quality medium-sized surf developing on Monday and perhaps surviving part-way into Tuesday. Wednesday looks a total mess with a strong NW’ly wind, but then smoother waters could possibly return for the end of the week (although that is very uncertain at this stage). The tidal range will be medium to small throughout the week, with Monday’s high water being bang on Midday, then creeping through the afternoon on subsequent days, until Friday’s high water is bang on 5pm.

The next forecast update should be with you on either Thursday or Friday...
