Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 10/05/2021

Monday

Weather

Long sunny spells and brief cloudy interludes, with a chance of the odd shower. These showers are most likely in the early morning and then again in the late afternoon, but it’s also quite likely that they will just pass by on the horizon. The air will be cooler than at the weekend, with a mere 13-14°C for the max, and a moderate to fresh SSW’ly wind. Town and Fermain will be the warmest areas, but there will be some sheltered nooks along the north and west coast that also feel pleasant.

Surf and the Water

The surf won’t be as mega-chunky as on Sunday, but there will still be some pretty womping waves in the 4-6 foot range. If you are swimming then it would be best to avoid that swell by heading to either a north or an east coast spot. Big tides and big splashes… highs of 8.7m at 6:40am and 8.8m at 7pm.

Tuesday

Weather

The temperature will be more or less the same as on Monday, but there will be a couple of small changes. On the one hand, the SSW’ly wind will be a tad lighter, but on the other hand, there will be a greater chance of showers (especially in the afternoon).

Surf and the Water

Clean 3-4 foot surf in the morning, picking up to 5-6 feet in the late afternoon and evening. Once again, the best places to find smooth water for swimming will be on the north and east coasts. The tides on this day will be about 8.8m at 7:20am and 8.9m at 7:30pm.

Wednesday

Weather

The wettest day of the week, as a low-pressure system develops over Biscay and moves directly over the Channel Islands. This is going to give us a spell of persistent rain in the morning and then an evening of frequent and rather heavy showers. With any luck, we will have a dry and perhaps sunny afternoon, but that detail is very uncertain at the moment, so best not to set your heart on it. Max temperature… 12-13°C. Wind… moderate to fresh SSE’ly for the majority of the day, veering W’ly by evening.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast waves will be even cleaner than the previous days. This time they will be biggest in the morning and then they will shrink back to about 3 feet in the afternoon and evening. The tides will be about 8.9m high at 7:50am and 9m high at 8pm. (On this occasion, the east coast might be almost as splashy as the west coast).

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Much like Monday and Tuesday, we shall revert to a couple of mostly sunny days, with only an outside chance of catching a few showers. The difference however, will be the wind… light and variable on Thursday (which means the 13-14° temperature will feel really pleasant), then a moderate N’ly on Friday (a similar max temp but definitely a cooler feeling).

Surf and the Water

Thursday currently promises to have small clean waves and smooth water for swimmers. However, the current forecast for light and variable winds is not a very confident one. Friday’s stronger N’ly is a bit more certain though, so that day is clearly going to be one for south-coast swimming. The tides will still be large, but they will taper away such that Thursday’s breakfast-time high will be 8.8m and Friday’s will be just 8.5m. (The low tides will be in the early afternoons).

The Weekend

Weather

Rather like the weekend we’ve just had, it should warm up by at least a couple of degrees. However, the SW’ly wind is probably going to be lighter, so the sunshine might feel even more summer-like. There is a chance of the odd shower, but it’s more likely that these will be confined to inland parts of France and Britain. As always, the far end of the forecast is always a bit uncertain, so keep an eye on the updates to see if any changes develop.

Surf and the Water

The weather forecast maybe uncertain but we can be confident that there will be smooth water on the east coast and there will be plenty of surf on the west coast (due to the constant presence of low-pressure systems in the nearby Atlantic). Other than that, the only thing I can say with confidence is that the tidal range will continue to shrink.

The next update should be with you on Tuesday or Wednesday…
