Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Thursday 13/05/2021

Wednesday evening skyline...

Thursday

Weather

Unfortunately the change in the movement of Wednesday’s low-pressure system, not only lead to the rain arriving unexpectedly late but it has also messed up the forecast for the rest of the week, so here is a much needed rewrite… Thursday is now looking cloudy with a chilly force 4-5 WNW’ly wind and rain coming and going throughout the day (and possibly spilling into the night-time too). I’m afraid the max temp will only be 11-12°C, which is no warmer than the sea at the moment.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast waves won’t be any bigger than on Wednesday, 2-3 feet, but they will be a whole lot messier. Not a bad day for windsurfing and kite-surfing actually. The tides will be about 8.8m high around breakfast time and dusk. If you are going for a swim, then your best bet would be an early dip at Fermain, Moulin Huet or Saint Bay.

Friday

Weather

Due to Thursday’s deterioration, this is now looking like the nicer day of the two. The wind will be force 3-4 NW’ly in the morning, backing SW’ly by late afternoon. This wind will carry on bringing rather cool air to the islands, but it will be accompanied some sunny spells, so we should see a slightly more respectable max of 12-13°C. As for the weather, well there will be some showers first thing in the morning, but there probably won’t be any more until late evening.

Surf and the Water

The west coast waves will not be clean but they won’t be quite as choppy as on Thursday. The south-coast water should be lovely and smooth in the morning, so this will definitely be the time and place to go swimming. The tides will still be on the large side (8.6m), with highs around breakfast time and dusk.

The Weekend

Weather

The weekend forecast has not really changed. Friday night’s rain will clear through before breakfast time on Saturdays and then we are looking at a weekend of sunshine and showers, leading to max temps of about 13°C on each day. If I were to pick a better day for outdoor activity then it would probably be Saturday, because the showers are likely to be very few and far-between, which will allow the sunshine to really dominate the day. Sunday’s showers will be much more frequent and this will probably mean that the sunshine is reduced to just a few brief glimpses. As for the wind; that’s going to be pretty consistent throughout… a fresh force 5 WSW’ly, meaning that the most sheltered and comfortable area will always be Town.

Surf and the Water

Surfers will only have choppy 3-4 foot waves to play with on Saturday, but there should be some cleaner 6 foot waves to look forward to on Sunday. As for the swimming, the smoothest water will generally be at Havelet and Fermain, but there will also be some sheltered nooks along the north and west coast during the mid-morning high tides.

Next Week

Weather

With winds generally bringing air from the western half of the compass, we can expect a very similar week to the one before it. The daily headlines will be ‘sunshine and showers’, but the proportions will vary from day to day. This means that some days will be really quite pleasant, with temperatures comfortably reaching the mid-teens, but other days will be relatively rotten, with temperatures only just managing to reach the low teens.

Surf and the Water

Plenty of wave action on the west coast (albeit mostly messy), thanks to the constant presence of Atlantic low-pressure systems. There should be plenty of opportunities for windsurfing and kitesurfing too. Small tides all week, with highs in the late mornings on Monday and Tuesday, moving to the early afternoons through the rest of the week.

The next update should be with you on Sunday…
