Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Thursday 12/08/2021

Thursday

Weather

The warmest day of the week, with temps hitting 21-22°C in most parts of the island and easily reaching 23°C in Town. The breeze will be a very light S’ly in the morning, veering to a marginally perkier W’ly in the afternoon. By evening, a weak weather-front will have nudged in from the west. However, by the time it reaches us, it will have weakened so much that it might have died out altogether. Rain is very unlikely, but there might well be a brief spell of low cloud and mist patches to finish the day.

Surf and the Water

Really clean small surf (2 feet) in the morning, then some slightly choppier but also larger (3 feet) waves in the afternoon. High tide will be roughly 8.8m at 10am, then low tide will be roughly 1.6m at 4:10pm

Friday

Weather

Bubbly cloud will come and go through the morning, but the afternoon and evening should be consistently sunny. However, a force 3-4 WSW’ly breeze will prevent the sunshine from lifting temperatures quite as high as on Thursday. Max temps probably just 20°C in most areas and 21-22°C for Town.

Surf and the Water

Some relatively chunky west-coast surf; 4-5 feet with a cross-shore wind, so not particularly clean but still very rippable. If you’re after smooth water for swimming, then you will do quite well up at L’Ancresse but you will do even better than that if you head round to the east coast. High water roughly 8.6m at 10:30am, low water roughly 1.8m at 4:50pm.

The Weekend

Weather

Saturday looks super-sunny in France but cloudy and rainy in the UK, thanks to the arrival of an Atlantic low-pressure system. The difficult thing to pin down, is whether we will come more under the influence of the French weather or the British. The most likely outcome will be that we enjoy sunny spells for a good chunk of Saturday daytime, but then cloud and patchy light rain will take us through Saturday night and Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon should then become fine and sunny although with a rather cool NW’ly breeze. Town will be the warmest area on both days, with a max temps of around 21°C on Saturday, then just 20°C on Sunday.

Surf and the Water

The tidal range will shrink to a medium size, with highs at 11:10am on Saturday and at midday on Sunday. As for the surfing and swimming… the surfing will be best on Saturday (3 feet and not as choppy as on Sunday) and the swimming will be good on both days, so long as you head to a sheltered spot (most likely found along the east coast, or perhaps along the south coast on Sunday afternoon).

Next Week

Weather

High pressure will be in charge of our weather throughout the week, so rain is very unlikely, except perhaps for a brief spit and spot during any cloudier spells. The first half of the week (Monday to Wednesday) looks likely to have a relatively cool NW’ly airflow, because the high-pressure system will be over the Atlantic through that time. Then on Thursday and Friday, as the high-pressure system moves over the UK, we are likely to pick up a warmer E’ly airflow, so there’s just a chance that daily max temperatures will pick up from 20 or 21°C, to something more exciting like 24 or 25°C. It’s early days yet though, so best to keep an eye on the updates to see how the story goes.

Surf and the Water

The surf forecast is just as uncertain as the weather forecast (probably more so). However, the current expectation is for sloppy but rideable waves at the beginning of the week (probably 2-3 feet), then very small but much cleaner waves at the end of the week (probably only 1 foot at best). Medium-small tides throughout, with lows generally in the mornings and highs generally in the afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
