Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Saturday 11/09/2021

Saturday

Weather

Dry and quite a lot sunnier than on Friday, with the best of that sunshine being in the afternoon. Best of all, the W’ly breeze will be much lighter than on Friday, so it’s going to be at least a degree warmer, with a top temp of 18-19°C (perhaps even 20°C in Town).

Surf and the Water

There will be some small but rideable waves in the morning, just the sloppy leftovers from the stronger winds of Friday. Then in the afternoon, when the wind is lightest, the conditions will become lovely for other activities like swimming and paddle-boarding. High water will be 10:10am (9.1m) and low water will be at 4:30pm (1.5m).

Sunday

Weather

Another dry day and the breeze will be even lighter than on Saturday, so you probably won’t notice that it changes to a SE’ly direction. The morning will be gorgeously sunny and then the afternoon will become rather cloudy. However, by that time, warm air will be wafting over from France, so it’s going to feel just as lovely as the morning. Max temp probably 20-21°C.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf should still be 1 foot and clean, with a slim chance it could pick up to 2 feet if the first super-long-period hints of ex-hurricane Larry pulse through. Apart from that, with such light breezes, we are simply talking about more beautifully smooth water for swimming etc. High water will be at 10:50am (8.6m) and low water will be at 5:10pm (2m).

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

Monday is looking very wet for a time, but it’s uncertain when. This is because a slow-moving band of heavy rain (parked over the mouth of the Channel through Sunday) is expected to finally amble eastwards, but the movement of this feature is so sleepy that it’s really uncertain whether it will blot out the first half of the day or the second. In either case, we are only looking at a gentle E’ly breeze, bringing generally warm air from the continent. For Tuesday, we should be looking at mostly sunny skies, with virtually no wind at all, as the Islands will occupy a big flabby gap between weather systems. The temperature feeling very comfortable on both days, peaking around 21°C.

Surf and the Water

The first waves from ex-hurricane Larry are likely to come through on Monday, when there will be probably be some really powerful, surgey 2-3 footers, separated by really long lull. Then Tuesday will probably see the swell jump up to about 4 feet, still packing a real punch and staying beautifully clean. The tidal movements will steadily decrease from medium to small, with high water around lunchtime.

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

Wednesday is the first day that the presence of ex-hurricane Larry in the north Atlantic will be felt in our weather. It will be rather subtle because said weather-system will still be so far away (around Greenland and Iceland). However, the strong flow of air around ex-Larry will have caused a drawn a ridge of high pressure up from the Azores region, which means that we are in for a dry and sunny day with a moderate NW’ly wind. By Thursday, ex-Larry will have moved closer to home (mid Atlantic), causing our wind to gradually back to a gentle SW and the sunshine to gradually turn hazy as high cloud spills towards us, ahead of a big old soggy weather-front on Friday.

Surf and the Water

By Wednesday, the waves should still be around 4 feet but much more consistent and without the long lulls. However, the wind will make the water choppier on the west coast. The surf should remain a similar size through the rest of the week and the wind changes should make it increasingly clean. For the smoothest swimming conditions, it will generally be best to head east, although Friday also looks pretty good in the north. Low tides - late mornings. High tides - late afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
