Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting Monday 20/09/2021

Monday

Weather

Super sunny for the vast majority of the day. Any cloud that briefly passes over the sun and casts a shadow, will not have the potential to expand and cover the sky. Rather it will swiftly blow on to Jersey and France, thanks to the moderate to fresh N’ly wind. That wind is going to keep the temperature firmly below the magic twenties (max 18°C) and it’s going to make the sunshine feel more chilly than you’ld expect. If you’ve got the day off and you have plans to throw down a blanket on some sand, then your best bet will be the south coast beaches between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Surf and the Water

3-4 foot surf on the west coast, somewhat spoilt by the cross-shore wind. Possibly some clean 1 footers on the south coast for a little bodysurfing too. High tides will be 8.9m at 7am and 9.3m at 7:20pm. Low tide will be 2m at 1:30pm.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Weather

Both days dry with slightly more cloud than Monday, but generally bright and feeling quite a bit warmer thanks to much gentler winds. That said, the actual temperature rise will only be small... probably getting up to 19°C in all parts of the islands on Tuesday, then perhaps tickling 20°C in Town on Wednesday. Tuesday’s breeze will be a force 2-3 NE’ly, which will once again lend itself to the fabulous south coast beaches whilst we enjoy another very low tide in the afternoon (lovely for a jaunt to Lihou too). Wednesday’s breeze (variable force 1) will be virtually non-existent, until a force a force 3-4 W’ly develops in the late afternoon.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be much cleaner, although steadily getting smaller (2-3 feet on Tuesday and 1-2 feet on Wednesday). Furthermore, we will have much smoother water for swimming, kayaking and paddle-boarding all around the islands. Tuesday morning’s high water will be about 9.2m at 7:40am and Wednesday morning’s will be about 9.3m at 8:20am.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

The rather long-lived presence of Hurricane Odette in the Atlantic, does throw a bit of uncertainty on the behaviour of the jet-stream this week. However, the current expectation is that it will slip slightly southwards for Thursday and Friday, bringing the rain-laden low-pressure systems down from Iceland and Shetland, into northern Britain. This is still quite a distance from us, but it will be close enough that the W’ly wind strengthens to fresh force 5 and the associated weather-fronts are likely to give us an hour or two of rain here and there. Temperatures will take a bit of a tumble in most parts of the island (only just scraping 18°C maxima), but Town will still be nice and sheltered, so we should comfortably manage 19°C there.

Surf and the Water

Choppy 2-4 feet waves on both days. As for the swimming conditions, Thursday is looking best on the south coast and Friday is looking best on the east. High tides will be in the early to mid mornings (still over 9m and possibly quite messy on the west coast roads). Low tides will be in the mid-afternoons.

The Weekend

Weather

Another couple of relatively uncertain days, but it currently looks as though the low-pressure system over Northern Britain will become larger and quite a lot more vigorous, probably increasing the wind to a strong force 6 SW’ly and making the occasional weather-fronts slightly wetter and more prolonged. That said, there will be some sunny interludes and our air will be coming from a slightly warmer origin, so it should be a bit easier to attain maxima of 20°C in Town.

Surf and the Water

Very little change in the size of the surf, but becoming quite a lot cleaner as the winds back SW’ly and even S’ly for a time. Medium large tides, with highs in the mid to late mornings and lows in the late afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Tuesday or Wednesday…
