Wednesday
Weather
Perhaps the best day of the entire half term, with a good deal more sunshine than on Tuesday, but still with a few cloudy spells, especially in the morning. The wind will be S’ly force 4, rather than the WSW’ly of the previous two days. Meaning that the west coast will feel a lot more sheltered and comfortable, but the east coast will feel slightly less so. Temperatures will be relatively high for late October, peaking at 17°C in the afternoon, then only falling to about 13°C overnight.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be beautifully clean, starting the day at 3-4 feet and finishing up at 5-6 feet. And it won’t just be the surfers who are happy, but also the windsurfers and kite-surfers. As for the s swimmers, then the north and west coasts will be best, so long as you tuck into a bit of shelter, preferably around the time of high water, which will be about 7.5m at 10:30am.
Thursday
Weather
Another totally dry day. With the wind direction remaining S’ly, the temperature of the air will continue to be higher than the seasonal average… max/min temps pretty much the same as on Wednesday. That wind will be stronger though (fresh force 5) and the skies will be cloudier, so it probably won’t feel quite as lovely. For the very best shelter and warmth, I’d probably recommend a good walk around Pleinmont or perhaps Richmond.
Surf and the Water
Another day of super-clean 4-5 foot surf on the west-coast surf, and this time the windsurfing conditions will be even better. Just like the previous day, swimmers will need to shelter in those same cosy nooks, and this time high water will be 7m at 11:00am.
Friday and the Weekend
Weather
And so we come to the rotten end of the week. The precise timings are increasingly uncertain as we progress through these three days. However, it currently looks as though each day will see the arrival of heavy persistent rain in the small hours of the morning. Then that rain, after forming some pretty big puddles, should clear off mid-late morning (each day) and leave us with sunny spells and just the odd brief shower through the rest of daylight hours. Rainfall totals are likely to be about 10mm each day, but there is a chance of up to 20mm on Sunday. Max temps 15-16°C but always feeling rather cool, because the SW’ly wind will generally be force 5-6 (perhaps even strong force 7 on Sunday).
Surf and the Water
The wind direction will keep the surf clean through each morning and lunchtime. However, the wind will have a tendency to turn onshore and messy in the afternoons. If you are swimming then steer well clear of the south coast; as for the other coasts, the best chance of finding some smooth water will be when the tide is high (lunchtime/early afternoon) so that you can get as much shelter from the cliffs and sea-walls as possible.
Next Week
Weather
Sorry folks, but the unsettled theme looks set to hold on for a while yet. Sure there will be some sunshine, but there will also be lots of heavy showers or longer spells of rain on most days. Furthermore, that won’t be the only way to get a thorough soaking, because the tides will be getting very big in the second half of the week, so with strong W’ly or NW’ly winds we can certainly expect some overtopping of those west-coast walls.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be on the shrink and it’s expected to be choppy every day. However, the swimming conditions will be lovely on the south and east coasts. As for the tides, they will be getting big and springy again. With low water moving to the middle part of the day, and high water moving towards dawn and dusk.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
