Wednesday
Weather
Sandwiched between four other cloudy days, this week’s hump-day promises to be the only day with a decent amount of sunshine. However, it will be a bit windier than the other days, with a force 3-4 NNW’ly bringing marginally cooler air to the islands. Therefore, the max temp will only be 12-13°C and the area that feels warmest will be the south coast.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will definitely be better in the afternoon, because it will increase from 2-3 feet to 4-5 feet. Furthermore, the wind will be slightly lighter in the afternoon, so the waves will be marginally cleaner. As for swimming and paddle-boarding etc, best to hit the south coast in the morning or the east coast in the afternoon. Low water will be about 2.1m at 11:30am. High water will be about 8.6m at 5:20pm.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Another couple of bland but comfortable days, much like we had at the start of the week. The skies cloudy but probably dry throughout, with just the gentlest of breezes…. force 2-3 WNW’ly on Thursday and force 1-2 SW’ly on Friday. The temperature will only vary between about 10-11°C in the night time and 12-13°C in the daytime.
Surf and the Water
Semi-clean 2-3 foot surf on Thursday, then super-clean 3-4 foot surf on Friday. Great swimming conditions in most places, at most times, although the tides will be getting bigger, so the currents will naturally be getting stronger. Low water around lunchtime. High water slightly before dawn and after dusk.
The Weekend
Weather
A weekend of two halve; dry, bright and virtually windless on Saturday (max temp only 12°C but feeling really comfortable and pleasant); then fresh and chilly-feeling N’ly winds on Sunday, with a high chance of showers, which could be on the heavy side (the temperature struggling to do any better than 10°C).
Surf and the Water
Beautifully clean and shapely 3-4 foot waves on Saturday. Then no smaller on Sunday, but much much messier I’m afraid. Swimmers will enjoy all parts of the island on Saturday, but the south coast will really be the only pleasant place to take a dip on Sunday. High water will be around dawn-time (roughly 9m). Low water will be around lunchtime.
Next Week
Weather
Monday to Wednesday are looking cold, with a force 4-5 NE’ly wind for the majority of the time. This should mitigate any ground-frost but it will feel quite bitter at times. Skies will be mixed with cloud and sunshine, and it’s highly likely that showers will develop in the Dover Strait, some of them going on to hit us, whilst others will be destined to miss. Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, we will probably see the arrival of a deep Atlantic low pressure system, which will bring slightly warmer air, but also some very strong SSW’ly winds and some more prolonged periods of rain.
Surf and the Water
Surfers will have to put up with small choppy waves Monday to Wednesday (and perhaps Thursday), but these will most likely be replaced by much bigger and cleaner waves by Friday. Windsurfers and kite-surfers will probably be the ones who are blessed with the most consistently good conditions.
The next forecast update will be on Thursday evening…
