Thursday
Weather
A showery morning, but those showers not quite the stingers that they were on Wednesday, mainly because the wind won’t be quite as strong… this time just a force 5 NNW’ly, dropping off to force 4 by midday. Then, during the afternoon, the showers will die a way altogether and the sun should shine brightly, making this one of the finer moments of this unsettled period. For the very best of it, head on down to the south coast beaches or cliff-paths. Daytime max 8-9°C, overnight min 4-5°C.
Surf and the Water
Marginally cleaner west-coast surf, but smaller as well, this time around 4 feet and rather sloppy. Swimmers will find the nicest conditions along the south coast during the afternoon… low water 2m at 10:50am, high water 8.8m at 4:50pm.
Friday
Weather
The heaviest rain will be first thing in the morning and then again in the evening, leaving the middle part of the day to be relatively dry but still very cloudy and a bit murky I’m afraid. The wind will be a force 6 SW’ly in the morning, relaxing to a force 5 W’ly in the afternoon. Max temp, a relatively high 13°C, but still feeling quite unpleasant due to the wind and the weather.
Surf and the Water
The west coast will be good for windsurfing all day, but it will also be relatively good for wave-surfing during the morning (2-3 feet and cleaner than any other time since Monday). As for the swimming, the east coast will always be best for that. Low water 1.6m at 11:40am, high water 9.3m at 5:40pm.
The Weekend
Weather
The forecast for the coming weekend is looking remarkable similar to last weekend (remember Storm Arwen). Saturday will have strong force 7 to gale force 8 NNW’ly winds, with frequent showers of rain or hail. Then Sunday’s winds will not change direction but they will gradually relax to fresh force 5 and the showers will die away to almost nothing. The temperature will peak at about 10°C on both days but it’s going to feel a lot colder due to the wind, especially on Saturday.
Surf and the Water
Much like the majority of this week, the west coast might be appealing to windsurfers, but it will have to be the sheltered south-coast nooks for anybody who is seeking smoother water. Big tides, with highs of over 9.5m shortly before dawn and after dusk. Tide warnings will be highly likely for the west coast and, on Sunday morning, quite possibly for the east coast too.
Next Week
Weather
Monday looks wet but mercifully it doesn’t look very windy. Tuesday and Wednesday however, still wet at times, could be some of the windiest days of this whole unsettled period. This is due to a very deep low pressure system that is due to spin southwestwards from Icleland. At the moment, it’s uncertain whether this will pile right through us or just brush by to the west. When this becomes clear, we should have an idea of how strong the winds will be, so keep an eye on the updates and be prepared to batten down the hatches even tighter than you have already. Looking further ahead, Thursday and Friday will be much more settled, but with winds coming from the eastern quadrant, it’s likely to be a very cold end to the week.
Surf and the Water
Definitely some big clean surf on quite a few days, and obviously some pretty hardcore windsurfing conditions too. Keep an eye on the updates for any greater detail. As for the tides, they will be big but steadily reducing, starting the week with highs of about 9.7m and finishing with highs of about 8m.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
