Saturday
Weather
Sunny intervals, a few pretty rainbows and some squally showers of rain and hail. The heaviest showers will bring gusts of 45-50mph but the general background wind will be a force 6-7 WNW’ly. There won’t be too many places to hide, apart from the Fermain area, and perhaps a few south-coast nooks as well. Max temp 9-10°C, but with a wind-chill effect that will make it feel more like 3-4°C.
Surf and the Water
Big splashy high tides at 6am and 6:30pm. 6-8 foot west coast surf and some pretty hair-raising windsurfing conditions.
Sunday
Weather
A day of gradual improvement… the wind will swing to a NNW’ly and reduce force 5-6 in the morning, then force 4-5 in the afternoon. At the same time, the showers will reduce in frequency, such that the afternoon should be totally dry and probably quite sunny. It certainly won’t be warm though, with a max temp of only 8-9°C. If you are going to treat yourself to a lovely weekend walk, then the south-coast cliff-paths will probably be the loveliest location.
Surf and the Water
Similarly big and splashy high tides at 6:50am and 7:10pm. The west-coast windsurfing should be great again, and it could be worth looking along the south coast for some clean fun 2-4 foot waves.
Monday
Weather
Sunday’s settled weather will have lasted well into the night but I’m afraid it will have turned foul again by Monday morning, with strong force 6 SW’ly winds and a band of persistent rain. By lunchtime, the rain will have turned to isolated showers and there should be plenty of sunny spells to try and dry up the puddles. The afternoon wind will also help with that task, because that will have strengthened to a force 7 WNW’ly. No such thing as peace and quiet I’m afraid, but at least the temperature will have perked up a bit, reaching a max of 12°C.
Surf and the Water
Clean 3-4 foot surf along the west coast in the morning, but those winds will be quite tricky to deal with. However, once again, pretty fabulous if you’re a hardcore windsurfer.
Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather
Tuesday will be another relatively mild day but that will be very little compensation for the cloudy skies, persistent rain and relentless force 7 SSW’ly winds. Wednesday won’t be much better I’m afraid, the persistent rain turning to occasional heavy showers, and the wind swinging to a WSW’ly direction but not really getting much lighter. Max temps 11-12°C on Tuesday and 9-10°C on Wednesday.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean 6 foot waves on Tuesday, doubling in size and turning very messy on Wednesday. Both days great for windsurfing though. The tides will still be very splashy but the will be getting ever so slightly smaller, Tuesday morning’s high will be 9.5m at 8:20am, and Wednesday mornings high will be 9.1m at 9:10am.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Holy moly I think we need a little bit of a break from all this wind don’t we. So be sure to seize the one calm and dry day that we are treated to on Thursday, as the deep low-pressure system of the previous days shuffles along to France and the Mediterranean. Blink and you’ll miss it though, because on Friday it’s back to howling NW’ly winds and frequent squally showers.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean 4-5 foot surf on Thursday, followed by another big and choppy day on Friday. The tides will get significantly smaller though, with highs of 8.5m on Thursday morning and just 8m on Friday morning.
The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
