Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Thursday 16/12/2021

Thursday

Weather

Much like Wednesday afternoon, there will be quite a bit of low-cloud and a little mistiness, but the sunshine will frequently manage to burn through. The winds will be just a tad stronger, this time they will be force 3-4 rather than force 2-3, coming from a SE’ly direction in the morning and then a due E’ly in the afternoon. Max temp 10°C, min temp 7°C.

Surf and the Water

Super-clean 4 foot waves on the west coast. The only thing that isn’t in its favour is the tides… With low-tide at 10:50am, the dawn session is likely to be very brief and then the late afternoon session is likely to be crowded. As for the swimming, that will be nicest on the west coast, especially at Cobo in the late afternoon.

Friday

Weather

Another dry day, with a mixed bag of cloud and sunshine, probably with a greater amount of sunshine than on Thursday. We will still have a force 4 E’ly wind in the morning and then it will freshen up to force 5 by late afternoon, so it is going to feel rather chilly… the actual max temp being 10°C again, but the ‘feels-like’ being a mere 5-6°C.

Surf and the Water

Stronger offshore winds and slightly smaller waves, will mean that it’s not quite as easy to surf as the previous day. Still lovely though, especially first thing in the morning, when the swell will be biggest (probably 3 feet). Low water will be at 11:30am and high water will be at 5:30pm (roughly 8.1m).

The Weekend

Weather

Force 5-6 E’ly winds on Saturday morning, easing to force 4-5 on Sunday. The temperature diminishing by about half a degree per day, as we carry on enjoying dry weather and occasional sunshine.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be a little bit tougher once again, with a fresh offshore wind on both days and the waves struggling to exceed 2 feet. It will certainly still be good for longboarding though. Both high tides (both days) will be during the hours of darkness and the lows will be around lunchtime.

Next Week

Weather

From Monday through until Wednesday, we will have the same old dry weather and partial sunshine as the previous days. There will be a slight wind-change though as it gradually backs to a SE’ly direction and drops off to light force 3. This will bring French air to the islands, and that’s pretty cold at this time of year, so we will continue to see a daily temperature decline of about half a degree, such that we are struggling to get above 7°C by Wednesday. After that; maybe on Thursday, maybe on Friday (Christmas Eve) we will probably see the return of showers or longer spells of rain, as Atlantic low-pressure systems, finally manage to get as far east as Britain and the Channel. Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Welsh mountains might all be treated to sprinkling of snow. This is bound to generate a lot of conversation as people start to speculate the odds of a white Christmas. However, I would say the odds of that are very low (less than 5%), although we might well see the odd moment of hail or sleet.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will probably be close to flat on Monday and Tuesday, but then it will jump right back to a solid 4-6 feet to finish the week. The wind still blowing offshore for the majority of the time, perhaps going variable on Thursday and Friday (Christmas Eve). The tidal range will be medium-large, with highs in the early mornings and lows in the afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
