Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting New Year’s Day 2022 woohoo!

Saturday (NY’s Day)

Weather

Like many recent days, we will have a mixture of weathers. The majority of it will be cloudy but dry, some of it will be sunny (a good portion of the morning) and some of it will be showery (most likely late afternoon and evening). The most consistent elements will be the wind and the temperature… wind SSW’ly force 4-5, temperature varying between a min of 11°C and a max of 14°C. For the most comfortable New Year outing, then head to just about any coast except for the south. Have a great 2022 everybody!

Surf and the Water

Another day of amazingly clean 4-5 foot west-coast surf. It doesn’t get much better than that. If you are heading for a skimpy-dip then it would be great to take advantage of the mild weather, best to filter out the wind though, so I’d advise heading in as close to the high tide as possible so you can use the sea-walls as wind-breaks. This is going to mean going late afternoon because the actual high is shortly after sunset (8.7m at 5:20pm).

Sunday and Monday (Bank Hol)

Weather

There will be a gradual drop in temperature through these two days, as a strong force 6 WSW’ly. Blasts up the Channel, bringing occasional showers and the odd sunny spell. The showers will be rather sparse during the daytimes, but they will become frequent overnight (Sunday into Monday), merging into quite a long spell of heavy rain, probably yielding between 5 and 15mm so we can expect some pretty big puddles on Monday morning. Max temps 12-13°C on Sunday then 11-12°C on Monday. Head somewhere east like Town or Fermain, for the best shelter and relative warmth

Surf and the Water

Fairly choppy 6 foot waves on both days, but some really good windsurfing conditions too. As for the swimming… east coast will be best for that. Low tides will be at lunchtime, high tides will be a bit before dawn and after dusk (all between 9m and 9.5m).

Tuesday and Wednesday

Weather

By Tuesday morning the wind will have veered to a NW’ly direction and by evening it will be a straight N’ly, meaning that we are in for a much sunnier but also a much cooler day… the max temp just 9-10°C and the wind-chill making it feel more like 4-5°C. There could be a brief shower or two, especially in the morning, but sunshine should really be the dominant feature through the afternoon. Then, after a chilly Tuesday night, we should be in for a classic winter Wednesday. Max temp only 8-9°C but with high pressure overhead, the air should be lovely and clear and the W’ly breeze should be very light and comfortable.

Surf and the Water

The west coast waves will be massive and messy on Tuesday, but the south coast should offer some lovely clean 4-5 foot wedges. Wednesday’s waves should be much cleaner along the west coast, but the swell will be dropping like a stone, starting the day at 3-4 feet and finishing up with only 2 feet at best. Big tides both days, with highs of about 9.5m at breakfast time.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

It will be a bit like going back to Monday, except worse I’m afraid… both days will have howling W’ly winds (probably strong force 7 or maybe even gale force 8). The showers will be pretty frequent, but they will at least be brief and they will be punctuated by sunny spells and rainbows. Daily max temps will probably be 10°C, but the wind-chill factor will make them feel as if they are no higher than 5°C.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will a big frothy mess, but it could be a couple of classic days for our windsurfers and kite-surfers. The tidal range will still be very large, but it will be shrinking day by day, with a late morning high of breakfast time high of 9.4m on Thursday and a mid-morning high of just 9m on Friday.

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
