Guernsey Weather Fox

7-day Forecast. Starting 08/01/2022

Saturday

Weather

Not a great weekend weather-wise, but don’t worry, it won’t all be quite as awful as Saturday. Over the course of Friday night, a strong force 6-7 WSW’y will have established and this will have raised the temperature to 10 or 11°C and brought a large area of rain, drizzle and general murk. By early afternoon, we will have accumulated over 10mm of rain, so the puddles will already be pretty massive. Then, during the rest of the afternoon and overnight, a slightly stronger W’ly wind will bring a succession of squally showers, each of them very brief but potentially heavy enough to double the day’s rainfall.

Surf and the Water

The waves will be pretty much as huge as they were through Friday, possibly making for some half-decent surf at Pembroke or one of the nearby reefs. However, the only other options would be a bit of proper hardcore windsurfing, or maybe a high-tide swim at Fermain (8.5m at 10:30am).

Sunday

Weather

Apart from a few residual showers at breakfast time and then some more drizzly rain in the evening, this should be a dry and much more settled day. The temperature will stay around 10°C, but the wind will be a moderate force 4 WNW’ly, so that will feel significantly more comfortable, especially in Town and in the Fermain area.

Surf and the Water

The waves will still be pretty huge, so perhaps the south coast will offer some decent waves for surfers. Once again, the sheltered east will be the only advisable option if you are keen for a sea-swim. High water will be 7.9m at 11:10am.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

Sunday night’s rain will become even more drizzly on Monday, as the wind backs WSW’ly and the temperature and humidity rise further. We can expect quite a lot of mist through the day, and the high-ground of the island might see some occasional fog. This could lead to a delay or two at the airport, but I currently don’t expect it to be particularly disruptive. Tuesday morning will probably be just the same as Monday, except that the wind will drop off from moderate force 4 to light force 2-3. Then, during the afternoon, when this gentle breeze wafts around to a NW’ly direction, the cloud and mist should be replaced by some soft sunshine.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast waves will reduce to a manageable size (5-6 feet) and they will become increasingly clean. Furthermore, with very small tidal movements (highs at lunchtime), there should be lots of options at different times and different places.

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Three days of partial sunshine and gentle NE’ly breezes. Temperatures will take a minor tumble, with daily maxima of about 10°C on Wednesday, 9°C on Thursday and 8°C on Friday. However, the lack of wind will make the days feel much more comfortable. The overnight periods will be more noticeably chilly though, with min temps of between 3 and 6°C (depending on cloud-cover) and the likelihood of some ground–frost.

Surf and the Water

More clean, top quality surf (roughly 4 feet Wednesday and Thursday, probably just 2-3 feet on Friday). Lovely swimming and paddling conditions too, with very small tidal movements (lows in the mornings and highs in the afternoons).

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
