Guernsey Weather Fox

7+day Forecast. Starting Thursday 20/01/2022

Thursday

Weather

This is the first of a few simple days. The sky will be a missed bag of cloud and sunshine, but there won’t be any rain. The distinctive thing about this day will be that the wind is slightly stronger (force 4-5 NNE’ly. This means that the max temperature of 7°C will feel a bit cooler than the same max temp will on other days. Best to head to the south coast cliffs and beaches if you want to have a more sheltered and comfortable walk somewhere.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be a little bigger than the previous days (3-4 feet) but I’m afraid the cross-shore wind will make a bit of a mess of it. Head down to Petit Port and you might be treated to some clean and rideable 2-footers. The south coast will also be a lovely area to go for a swim, especially from breakfast time to mid-morning, when the tide will still be close to the cliffs (high water will be 8.6m at 8am).

Friday

Weather

Overnight, the NNE’ly wind will have fallen light (force 2-3), allowing a patchy ground-frost to have formed by dawn Friday. From that cold start, we will probably see temperatures rise to the same 7°C max as on Thursday. However, the sunny spells should feel more pleasant due to the lack of wind-chill.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be smaller (2 feet) but also much cleaner, thanks to the slacking of the wind. Once again however, the south coast water will be even smoother. High water will be 8.6m at 8:30am and low water will be 1.8m at 2:50pm.

The Weekend

Weather

Both days are looking very cloudy, meaning that the temperature will be a bit of a flat-line… 5-6°C day and night. So long as you wear your accessories (hats and gloves etc) then it shouldn’t be too uncomfortable, because the breeze won’t be any stronger than a light force 2 (NE’ly on Saturday and E’ly on Sunday). All areas will be equal, in terms of temperature and feeling, so you might as well just pick your favourite area, when you’re heading out for a run or a bike ride.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be flat for the majority of the time, but maybe 1-2 feet in the early mornings, when the tide is pushing towards high. As for the swimming, the south coast will still be best for that. High tides mid-mornings, Low tides late afternoons.

Next Week

Weather

The wind will stay E’ly, mostly very light but possibly freshening up at times. The most likely max temps will be around 6-7°C every day. However, the overnight mins are very uncertain. The skies will fluctuate between cloudy and clear. Clear nights and light winds will mean frost for sure, but we are often more likely to be spared, due to cloudier skies and a strengthening wind. As for the possibility of rain, that’s looking rather remote at the moment, with just the odd light shower developing in the Dover Strait, and more likely wandering off to Dorset rather than the Channel Islands.

Surf and the Water

The west coast surf is looking lovely and clean all week. It will be tiny at times, possibly flat (hopefully not), but there is also a chance of some fairly special 3-foot pulses. As for the tides, they will be shrinking from a Monday high of roughly 8m at 10:20am, to a Friday high of 7.2m at 2:50pm.

The next forecast update will be on Friday…
