Monday
Weather
The various days of this unsettled week will come in two flavours… ‘sunshine and showers’ and ‘grey and drizzly’. Either way, each day will be mild and breezy. And to kick off the week, we have a Monday of ‘sunshine and showers’. In the morning, the breeze will be a moderate force 4 W’ly, bringing quite a barrage of heavy showers, possibly even with thunder. Through the afternoon, the breeze will veer to a fresh force 5 NW’ly and the showers will become less intense and much less frequent. In between the showers, the sunshine should be lovely and bright, lifting the temperature to a max of 10°C.
Surf and the Water
A very messy 4-6 foot surf on the west coast, but some clean 2-3 foot waves could be on offer along the south coast. The windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions will be best in the north and west during the afternoon, and the swimming conditions will be best along the east coast. Low water will be about 2.9m at 11:35am, then high water will be about 7.8m at 5:36pm.
Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather
The flavour of these two days will be grey and drizzly, as force 5-6 SW’ly wind brings increasingly mild and moist air through Tuesday. Overnight, the drizzle will actually turn into some proper heavy rain for a few hours, before turning back to drizzle on Wednesday, with the wind increasing to a force 6-7 W’ly. The temperature will begin at 9-10°C on Tuesday morning, then pick up to about 12°C during Tuesday night, where it will stay right through Wednesday, finally dropping back to 9 or 10°C by Thursday morning.
Surf and the Water
Tuesday’s surf will be 4-6 feet and fairly clean, then Wednesday’s will be 6-8 feet and fairly choppy… on the west coast that is… you can always try the north coast on the off chance of something much smaller but cleaner. Once again, there will be plenty of action for windsurfers and kitesurfers (not for beginners though), and the swimmers will need to head for the maximum shelter of eastern Bays like Fermain. The tides will be getting springy, with highs of 8.2m around dawn and dusk on Tuesday, and 8.7m around the same time on Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
And it will be back to sunshine and showers for these two days. Thursday leaning more towards the sunshine, with just a fresh force 5 WSW’ly. Friday leaning more towards the showers, and pretty squally showers at that, given that the wind will strengthen to a gale force 8 WNW’ly. Neither day will feel particularly toasty, but there is no doubt that Thursday will be the nicer of the two, with a max of 11°C (feeling like 7 or 8°C due to the wind), as opposed to Friday which will have a max of 9°C (feeling more like 3 or 4°C due to the wind).
Surf and the Water
Thursdays surf will be about 6-8 feet and rather choppy, but certainly clean enough to be worth a bit of a bash. Friday however, will be even bigger but it will be such an absolute mess that it’s pretty much a write-off. Bigger tides again… 8.9m at 7:08am Thursday, then 9.2m at 7:44am Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
Nothing is particularly certain at this range, but it looks as though we will be sticking with the two main themes of the week… Saturday mostly following the sunshine and showers regime (with a strong force 6 WSW’ly wind and a max temp of 9-10°C), then Sunday reverting to the grey and drizzly story (with a strong force 7 WSW’ly and a max temp of 10-11°C).
Surf and the Water
More big and choppy west-coast surf but great conditions for our hardcore windsurfers and kitesurfers. Furthermore, just like all the other days of this week, Fermain will be the clear winner for anybody who wants to go for a sea-swim. The big tides continuing, with the highest highs around breakfast time (roughly 9.1m).
The next forecast update will be on Tuesday or Wednesday…
